Combattimento (Instrumrental Ensemble)

Founded: 2014 - The Netherlands

Combattimento* is one of the world’s foremost ensembles specializing in early music on modern instruments. Combattimento plays music from the Baroque period. Well-known and unknown works from the 17th and 18th century Baroque music form the core of their repertoire, from well-loved masterpieces to those completely unknown, especially the styles in which fantasy and movement play a major role. The members of Combattimento, each with solo qualities, carry a wealth of accumulated knowledge and experience with them and want to share this with the audience. Together they form a close-knit ensemble that has worked for years and continues to work on a completely unique sound and playing style: energetic, fiery, style-conscious.

The ensemble likes to get close to you and wants to make classical music lively and captivating for you. That is why you will often encounter us on smaller stages, such as beautiful churches, intimate concert halls or an old castle. There you will literally sit close to us and experience the musical experience even more intensely. Entertaining and informative explanations during the concert give you a glimpse into the background of this music.

Combattimento plays on modern instruments, convinced that the sound intensity of these better suits the listening practice of today's concertgoer. They look at Baroque music through modern glasses and make new discoveries. This is mainly an experimental affair that takes shape during rehearsals. By playing at 440hz they are able to make authentic programmatic connections with more modern music, as well as collaborate with a wide range of partners and soloists. They regularly do this in collaboration with like-minded organizations in the Netherlands, such as dance and opera companies and with their educational projects. They strive to bridge the gap between old and new, between traditional and modern, between the audience and the music. They do this through diverse and accessible programs that are relevant to today’s world.

Together they explore the boundaries of Baroque extravagance and spectacle. How did the music sound then? Can it be a bit rougher now? Can it be a bit slower? Or more dynamic? The result: exciting and energetic concerts with which they surprise you and put you on edge. Whether it is a 'classic' such as J.S. Bach's Concerto for 2 violins, strings & continuo in D minor ("Double") BWV 1043 or, for example, music by the nowadays much less well-known but at least as fascinating Giuseppe Antonio Brescianello. Come to their concerts and experience how they bring the music to life for you.

Combattimento regularly works with top soloists, such as Liza Ferschtman, Maarten Koningsberger, Lisa Larsson, Helena Rasker, Cécile van de Sant and Johannette Zomer and with companies such as the Scapino Ballet Rotterdam and the Nationale Reisopera. In the past, the ensemble has toured Germany, Spain, Central Europe, South America, Japan, Russia and the USA under the name Combattimento Consort Amsterdam. More than 35 CD and DVD productions have also been realized.

Combattimento specifically chooses rare repertoire: underrated masterpieces, newly composed Baroque-inspired pieces, and reconstructions by their own resident musicologist and co-artistic director Pieter Dirksen. They aim to touch the hearts of their fellow human beings, inspire, challenge and provide connection. Combattimento has received multi-year production subsidies from the Performing Arts Fund since 2017 and also from the VSB Fund on a project basis.

* Combattimento is the continuation of the former Combattimento Consort Amsterdam, which ended its activities at the end of January 2014.
