Halle Opera Chorus (Choir)

Founded: 1811-1836 - Halle (Saale), Saxony-Anhalt, Germany

The Halle Opera Choir [German: Chor der Oper Halle] was probably founded as a theater choir between 1811 and 1836 as a theatre choir.. Its responsibilities are extensive and stylistically diverse. These include, and continue to be, the operas W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte, Adriana Lecouvreur, Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny, Tosca, Anna Bolena, L'Africaine, Der fliegende Holländer, Aida, L.v. Beethoven's Fidelio, Messa da Requiem, and Die Großherzogin von Gerolstein, among others, in the Halle Opera's repertoire. World premieres such as the opera-oratorio Sky Disc – Himmelsscheibe – Disc del cel and Mein Staat als Freund und Geliebte by Johannes Kreidler are just as much a part of the opera choir's diverse repertoire as the George Frideric Handel's operas and oratorios, which present completely different vocal demands, as part of the annual Händel-Festspiele, such as Ariodante, Semele, Belshazzar, Alcina, Almira, Jephtha, and Julius Cäsar in Ägypten. The choir has also performed in musicals such as The Scarlet Pimpernel (with CD recording), Edgar Allan Poe (world premiere), Dracula, Young Frankenstein – Frankenstein Junior (Germany), Peter Pan (Germany), The Three Musketeers, and Sweeney Todd.

Since the 1980's, the choir has increasingly demonstrated its talent in major concert performances. In their own choral concerts - whether with the Staatskapelle Halle, with organ accompaniment, or a cappella - the singers demonstrate their quality and broad repertoire. The choir has performed, among other works, J. Haydn's The Creation, Johannes Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem, Gustav Mahler's Symphonies Nos. 2, 3, and 8 and his Klagendem Lied (original version), Igor Stravinsky's Psalm Symphony, and Benjamin Britten's War Requiem. In addition, members of the opera choir also perform solo roles in musical theater productions as well as in the city's concert and church music scene. Since the 2023-2024 season, the choir has been led by Choir Director Frank Flade.
