InAlto (Vocal & Instrumental Ensemble)

Founded: 2012 - Belgium

This Italian expression applies the same adjective to sea and mountain; it evokes at the same time their physical remoteness and the risks involved when exploring them.

The cornetto is definitely one of the most important musical instruments of the 16th and 17th century. It is made of wood and covered with leather or parchment and was considered the instrument most capable of imitating the human voice. And, just like the voice, it likes to explore the higher regions. Mersenne’s encyclopedia describes the cornetto as a “ray of light going through the clouds”.

InAlto aims to explore both vocal and instrumental music, bringing them to a sort of dialogue. Famous composers of the baroque in Europe such as Monteverdi, Heinrich Schütz or Michael Praetorius left us magnificent music cultivating this taste for risk taking, this worship of the high register.

Nowadays, a real danger exists of failing to convince with music that does not feel like ours anymore. By a thorough study of the available sources and by selecting the best “historically informed” partners and collaborators, InAlto seeks to bring out the best in the repertoire they play. Eventually, historical musical intruments are musical instruments as well, InAlto considers them as modern tools of expression.

InAlto’s recordings have earned accolades including 2 Diapason d’or and a Diapason d’Or of the year 2017, Choc de Classica, Joker absolu de Crescendo, Pizzicato Supersonic, 5 star in Rondo Magazin, Bestenliste Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik…

Since its debut in 2012, InAlto has performed in major seasons or festivals in Europe: De Bijloke Gent, Venetian centre for Baroque Music, Festival du Pays d’Auge, Museum Plantin-Moretus Anvers, Amuz, Festival Musiq3, Festival de Wallonie, Bozar Bruxelles, Concertgebouw Bruges, Classique à Monty, Schloss Gottorf Schleswig, Festival de Regensburg, Festival de Saint-Michel en Thierache, Juillet Musical de Saint-Hubert, Automne Musical de Spa, Société Philharmonique de Namur, Muziekgebouw Amsterdam, Tivoli Vredenburg Utrecht, Oude muziek in Utrecht, Le festival de l’Académie Bach d'Arques-la-Bataille, Musikfest Bremen, Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, Passie van de Stemmen Leuven, Festival de l’été Mosan, MA festival Bruges, Beethoven Fest Bonn, Musique et Nature en Bauges, Schütz Musikfest Dresden, Thüringer Bachwochen

The particularly rich year of 2023 saw the ensemble reach a new milestone with a production of Claudio Monteverdi’s Vespers to the Virgin. Three concerts, including the closing concert of the renowned MA Festival in Bruges, received a triumphant welcome from the public.
