Toke Møldrup (Cello)

Born: November 3, 1980 - Aarhus, Denmark.

The Danish cellist, Toke Møldrup, studied at Det Jyske Musikkonservatorium in Aarhus, Denmark; at Det Kongelige Danske Musikkonservatorium (Royal Danish Academy of Music) in Copenhagen, Denmark with with professor Morten Zeuthen and Tim Frederiksen; and at the Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe, Germany with professor Martin Ostertag (September 2004-June 2006). He also his studied in studied privately in Cologne, Chicago, Zagreb and Vienna, has participated in various master-classes, for example Kronberg Academy in Germany and the London Master Classes, with capacities such as Valter Despalj, Hans Jensen, David Geringas, Ralph Kirshbaum, Yo-Yo Ma, György Kurtág, and the Amadeus Quartet. He has won several international awards, including first prize at the European Broadcast Union's “New Talent” Competition in Bratislava in 2007, and first prize at the Danish String Competition in 2006. In 2003, as a member of the Paizo Quartet, he was awarded the Grand Prize at the 4th Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. An important influence on his musical development is The Alban Berg Quartet with whom he learned from as a part of the Paizo Quartet. In Denmark he has received numerous grants and honors, including the Jacob Gades Prize, the Harby Prize, and the Danish Music Critics' Artist Award.

Toke Møldrup made his highly acclaimed debut concert from the Royal Danish Academy of Music in 2005. In the 20 years of his career so far, he has performed both across Europe and in the USA, South America, Japan and the Middle East at major venues such as the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City, Wigmore Hall in London, Musikverein in Vienna, Berlin Konzerthaus and Daiichi Seimei Hall in Tokyo. A frequent guest at Danish music societies, he has performed as a soloist with Danish and international symphony orchestras under conductors such as Aldo Ceccato, Mika Eischenholz, Sanntu Rouvali, Thomas Søndergaard, Morten Ryelund Sørensen and Joshua Weilerstein, and at festivals such as Bergen International Festival, Lincoln International Chamber Music Festival, Monte-Carlo Spring Arts Festival and Oberstdorf Music Summer.

Toke Møldrup's collaboration with the Israeli pianist Yaron Kohlberg began in 2007 when the two musicians met at the Tivoli International Piano competition in Copenhagen. Since then the two have played concerts together in Denmark, Israel, and North America. Their newly released CD, entitled "Passionate" contains works by Igor Stravinsky, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Alberto Ginastera, among others.

Over and above Toke Møldrup?s strong focus on the standard cello repertoire, he has a keen interest in numerous other musical genres, and particularly in contemporary Danish music. Danish Composers such as Simon Steen-Andersen, Anders Koppel, Per Nørgård and Kasper Rofelt have all dedicated works to him. With a keen interest in developing the repertoire of the cello he has premiered many works by contemporary composers, among them the European premiere of John Williams' Cello Concerto, Geoffrey Gordon's Cello Concerto and Christian Winther Christensen's Concerto for cello and accordion. In 2017, he released the 6 suites for cello by J.S. Bach.

Toke Møldrup is principal cellist of the the Sjællands Symfoniorkester/Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra and since 2005 a teacher at the Royal Danish Academy of Music where he previously studied.

Toke Møldrup plays a David Tecchler cello (Rome, 1697) courtesy of the Augustinus Foundation. He recently received Queen Ingrid’s Honorary Award for his achievements on the Danish music scene. He currently lives in Copenhagen, Denmark.
