The Canadian choral conductor and organist, Daniel (Dan) Norman, began his love of music with the melodious songs of Ariel the Mermaid and the danceable beats of the Mini-Pops. This gave way to grunge and the smooth R n B of the early 1990's, both creating a natural segue into choirs and orchestras, and the realm of classical music. He obtained his Bacheloe of Music degree in Music Composition from the University of Western Ontario; and his Master of Music degree in Music Performance from the University of Toronto.
Sought after for his musical sensitivity and versatility, Daniel Norman has been an active conductor, keyboardist and collaborative artist for over a decade. He has directed an array of choirs, orchestras and chamber ensembles in North America and Europe performing in a range of genres including classical, operetta and musical theatre. Through his career he has collaborated with dance, visual and musical artists in large and chamber ensembles to perform both scripted and improvisatory compositions. He has also coached musicians across numerous instruments in interpretation and performance. He performs regularly as an organ soloist and enjoys featuring works of varying time periods and dialects.
In addition to his work as a freelance artist, Daniel Norman is Music Director at the Church of the Redeemer in Toronto and at the Convent of St. John the Divine. He also conducts the Hart House Chorus, and is Associate Conductor with Pax Christi Chorale. At Redeemer, he keeps his feet planted in the rich history of liturgical music, while always watching out for the next new song that will help give the community their voice. He is particularly excited about the music of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. |
