Mikko Perkola (Viola da gamba)

Born: 1977 - Finland

The Finnish gambist, Mikko Perkola, studied music in Finland at the Päijät-Häme Conservatory, and at the Sibelius-Academy in Helsinki He then continued to the Royal Conservatoire The Hague in the Netherlands. His teachers were Arvo Haasma, Markku Luolajan-Mikkola and Wieland Kuijken.

Mikko Perkola has given concerts and recorded chamber music in Europe together with e.g. Bergen Barokk, Barokksolistene, Norwegian Baroque Orchestra, Icelandic Chamber Orchestra, Concerto Palatino (Director: Bruce Dickey), Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, Capriccio Stravagante, Battalia, Retrover, Ensemble Severin; and recitals with Wieland Kuijken, Laurence Dreyfus, Topi Lehtipuu, Hans-Ola Ericsson, Anna Lindal and Markku Luolajan-Mikkola. In October 2006 he recorded J.S. Bach's Gamba Sonatas (BWV 1027-1029) (on Naxos) with harpsichordist Aapo Häkkinen. In 2011 they recorded music from François Couperin (on Naxos). He also recorded Rameau’s Pièces de clavecin en concert with Aapo Häkkinen and Petri Tapio Mattson (on Alba). Also in 2011. In 2005 he started cooperation with the Gramophone-awarded viol quartet Phantasm (Director: Laurence Dreyfus), with whom he toured the world and performed at e.g. London’s Wigmore Hall. In 2017, they received their 3rd Gramophone award.

Mikko Perkola has also made many radio recordings for YLE (the Finnish Broadcasting Company) and other European Broadcasting Companies. He is also industrious performer of contemporary music and he have played first performances from Giovanni Mancuso, Lucio Garau, Juhani Nuorvala, Henrik Martrander, Eero Hämeenniemi, Jyrki Linjama, Sampsa Ertamo and others. His working and interest has been lately with new experimental art and societal projects. He is working on the three year penitentiary theatre project in Finland with director Hannele Martikainen and did large scale asylum center -project with dancer Nina Hyvärinen and actor Jussi Lehtonen for the Finnish National Theatre which toured all 35 Asylum centers in Finland. He is also performing regularly in the nursing homes and hospitals. He is both a singer and composer in the Finnish group Tekijä Tuntematon, which interprets poems in a modern idiom. His wide range in music making includes collaborations with artists from different fields, from early music to multimedia and solo performances with amplified viol. His collaboration with Tero Saarnen Company (TSC) started in 2019, when Third Practice first premiered with the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra.
