The Austrian pianist and music pedagogue, Hans Petermandl, studied under Bruno Seidlhofer at the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Wien, where he was awarded the Bösendorfer Prize in 1958.
Hans Petermandl's career has involved him in a particular concentration on the work of J.S. Bach, with two recorded performances of the complete 48 Preludes and Fugues (BWV 846-869+BWV 870-893) for Austrian Radio, and performances of J. Haydn, L.v. Beethoven, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Paul Hindemith and contemporary composers. He was soloist in P. Hindemith's Piano Concerto under the composer’s direction. He performed Joseph Marx' Piano Concerto No. 2 "Castelli Romani" twice: in 1978 with the Wiener Symphoniker conducted by Karl Etti and in 1981 with the Münchner Philharmoniker conducted by Lior Shambadal. He has won considerable success in Vienna and elsewhere with his performances of the complete cycle of Schubert Piano Sonatas and concert-tours have included not only Europe but also Japan and the USA. He has appeared as a soloist under conductors of the greatest distinction and in chamber music recitals. For Supraphon he recorded an LP with L.v. Beethoven's Diabelli Variations and for Naxos four CD's with P. Hindemith's piano works.
Hans Petermandl taught at the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Wien from 1960 and led a piano class from 1971 to 2001. Among his pupils were: Senka Brankovic, Tom Bryant, Mia Elezovi, Thomas Kreuzberger, Marc Pantillon, Roberta Pili, Gerda Struhal, Stefan Vladar, and many others. He is a member of the Joseph Marx Society. He is married to the university professor Monika Petermandl. |
