The Swiss conductor and composer, Nicolás Rauss, received double training in orchestral and choral conducting with Michel Corboz at the Conservatoire de Musique de Genève (1977-1984). In 1987 he won unanimous First Prize at the 6th International Gino Marinuzzi Conducting Competition in San Remo.
Nicolás Rauss has developed his career mainly in Latin America, where he has conducted the main orchestras of the continent, from Sinfónica de San Pablo to the Orquesta Estable del Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. In Europe he has conducted the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, Sinfonie Orchester Biel Solothurn, Orchestra dell'Emilia-Romagna Arturo Toscanini and Orchestra Sinfonica di San Remo in Italy; the Hof Symphony, the Bavarian, Schleswig-Holstein and Niedersachsen Orchestras in Germany; the Macedonian Philharmonic and the Georgian National Symphony. In South America, he regularly conducts the Orquesta Sinfónica del Sodre, Philharmonie de Montevideo, and Orchestre de Chambre du Ministère de l’Éducation et de la Culture in Uruguay; the Symphonique de Porto Alegre, Paraná (Curitiba), Municipal de São Paolo, Orchestre à Cordes du Théâtre Amazonas à Manaus in Brazil; the Orchestre symphonique du Théâtre Argentino de La Plata, Cordoue, Mendoza, San Juan and Neuquén in Argentina; the Symphonie & Orchestre de Chambre du Chili in Chile; and the Orchestre Symphonique National du Pérou in Peru.
Nicolás Rauss has specialized in the classical repertoire and has developed a fondness for the most unexpected and experimental symphonies of Haydn, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Johann Christian Bach; In addition to the chamber orchestral repertoire of the 20th century, with emphasis on Martinů, Richard Strauss, Sibelius, Francis Poulenc and contemporary composers. In the vocal repertoire, he has conducted J.S. Bach's Weihnachts-Oratorium BWV 248, Magnificat in D major BWV 243 and numerous cantatas; George Frideric Handel's Messiah; Haydn's Stabat Mater and Missa Lord Nelson; W.A. Mozart's Missa Solemnis K. 337, Missa in C minor and Requiem; L.v. Beethoven's Missa in C, Symphony No. 9 and Choral Fantasy Op.80; Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah; Cherubini's and Verdi's Requiem, G. Puccini's Missa di Gloria, Gabriel Fauré's Requiem, Heitor Villa-Lobos' Choros 10 and Arthur Honegger's King David. In the opera field: H. Purcell's Dido and Aeneas; Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice; W.A. Mozart's Bastián und Bastiana, Le nozze di Figaro and Die Zauberflöte; Georges Bizet's Carmen; Bellini's Norma; Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera; Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana and Puccini's Turandot.
Nicolás Rauss has been Artistic Director of the of the Filarmónica de Mendoza in Argentina (January 2000-December 2004); Principal Conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica del SODRE in Montevideo, Uruguay (2006-2008), Titular Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Provincial de Rosario in Argentina (January 2008-February 2014), Artistic Director of the Orquesta USACH in Santiago de Chile (July 2012-June 2024). Since February 2023, he is Musical Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica del SODRE. In 2019-2020, he conducted Bruckner’s Symphony No. 8 at the Gasteig in Munich, and performed at the 50th Musical Weeks of Frutillar with the USACH Orchestra. |
