The Chilean organist and conductor, Alejandro Reyes van Eweyk, began his musical studies at the Universidad de Chile, completing the basic cycle in piano (9 years), theory, harmony and analytical technique. He graduated as Tonmeister (sound engineer) from the Musikhochschule Detmold, Germany, in 1981. At that same school he studied Sacred Music (organ, conducting and composition).
In 1983 Alejandro Reyes entered the Instituto de Música de la Universidad Católica where he currently works as Professor of the chairs of Choral Conducting, Reading of Scores and Harmony, in addition to conducting regularly the Orquesta de Cámara UC.
In 1991 Alejandro Reyes joined the "Syntagma Musicum", a prestigious group of Early Music at the Universidad de Santiago, later assuming its musical direction. He is organist and harpsichordist with the Orquesta de Cámara de Chile since 2000. He has formed and conducted renowned vocal ensembles such as the Collegium Josquin, Collegium Vocale, and Ludus Vocalis. He led the Corporación Bach by conducting a choir festival and two successful seasons of Easter (1989-1990). He has been invited to conduct the Orquesta de Cámara de Chile, Orquesta Sinfónica de Chile, Orquesta Clásica de la Universidad de Santiago and Orquesta Sinfónica de La Serena, performing numerous premieres.
In 1988, thanks to a grant from the Fundación Andes, Alejandro Reyes attended a course in Higher Interpretation in J.S. Bach's works, taught by Rosalyn Tureck in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In 1995 he received the award from the Círculo de Críticos de Arte for his career. He currently lives in Santiago, Chile.
