Myriam Rignol (Viola da gamba)

Born: July 12, 1988 - Perpignan, France

The French viola da gamba player, Myriam Rignol, began her musical education when she was 7 learning the viola da gamba at the CRR in Perpignan under the direction of Christian Sala. She received her diploma in 2004. When she turned 16 she went to Lyon to study at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse (CNSMD) with Marianne Muller, with whom she obtained her Master of Music degree in 2010. With the European Erasmus program she studied for a year with Rainer Zipperling at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne. She also studied at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles. She obtained Master of Music degrees in Viola da gamba, Chamber Music and Music Education (2005-2012). She also attended master-classes under the direction of Jordi Savall, Wieland Kuijken, Philippe Pierlot and Emmanuel Balssa. In June 2009 she won 2nd Prize at the International Competition for viola da gamba Bach-Abel in Köthen (Anhalt) and in May 2010 she won 1st Prize at the International Competition for Early Music in Yamanashi (Kôfu, Japan). In 2011, she won 2nd Prize as well as the Audience Prize during the International Competition of the Festival Musica Antiqua in Bruges.

Myriam Rignol regularly invited as a soloist, ensemble or orchestra in many countries (France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Italy, England, Croatia, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Norway, USA, Lebanon, Senegal, Japan, Colombia, Chile, Mexico, Brazil, …). She is a founding member (2007) of the Ensemble Les Timbres with violinist Yoko Kawakubo and harpsichordist Julien Wolfs, an ensemble that received the 1st Prize at the prestigious Bruges Chamber Music Competition (Belgium, 2009) and the Prize for Best Contemporary Creation, as well as at the Early Music Competition in Yamanashi (Japan) and which now performs regularly throughout Europe and in Japan.

Myriam Rignol is also a member of several ensembles, including Les Arts Florissants (Directors: William Christie) & Paul Agnew), Ensemble Pygmalion (Director: Raphaël Pichon) and Ricercar Consort (Director: Philippe Pierlot), Ensemble Correspondances (Director: Sébastien Daucé) and Musicall Humors (Director: Julien Léonard), with whom whom she regularly makes music and performs and has already made several recordings. She has also collaborated with various other ensembles or orchestras such as Le Poème Harmonique (Director: Vincent Dumestre), A Nocte Temporis (Director: Reinoud Van Mechelen), La Main Harmonique (Director: Frédéric Bétous), Musicall Humors (Director: Julien Léonard), Les Inventions (Director: Patrick Ayrton), Il Delirio fantastico (Director: Vincent Bernhardt), Le Concert Lorrain (Director: Stephan Schultz), Harmonie Universelle (Director: Florian Deuter), I Gemelli and The Consort Project. She also plays in consort with Marianne Muller, Pau Marcos Vicens and Christian Sala, Marc Mauillon and Angélique Mauillon, Marie Van Rijn and Cyril Auvity, Thomas Dunford and Léa Desandre. Member of the Musicall Humors consort with Lucile Boulanger, Julien Léonard, Joshua Cheatham and Nicholas Milne, she also forms a viol duo with Mathilde Vialle. Occasionally she participates in the productions of L'Achéron, Capriccio Stravagante, Hespèrion XX (Director: Jordi Savall), Arcangelo (Director: Jonathan Cohen) and Poème Harmonique.

Holder of a CA in early music, Myriam Rignol created in 2011 the viola da gamba class at the Conservatoire du Grand Besançon (which later became part of the Ecole Supérieure de Musique de Bourgogne Franche Comté). In September 2021, she became Professor of viola da gamba at the CNSMD in Lyon.
