An independent, non-governmental initiative, the Orquestra Acadêmica de São Paulo (São Paulo Academic Orchestra_ was founded in 2003 by conductor Luciano Camargo and violinist Kleberson Buzo, and has performed hundreds of concerts since its inception. The professional group was created for research into symphonic music performance, aiming for the continuous technical and artistic improvement of its members and the orchestral ensemble as a performing entity. From the beginning, it has also dedicated itself to the vocal-symphonic repertoire, continuously working in conjunction with the Coral da Cidade de São Paulo (São Paulo City Choir) - a community symphonic choir dedicated to concert music and opera - performing the main works of the repertoire for choir and orchestra, with the participation of renowned soloists.
With the founding of the Associação Coral da Cidade de São Paulo (São Paulo City Choral Association) in 2009, the orchestra came under the organization's auspices, gaining the opportunity to participate in concerts and operatic productions on the city's main stages, holding annual concerts at Sala São Paulo, as well as offering free concerts in the city's outskirts, especially at the Teatro Carlos Zara (CEU Butantã). From 2017 onwards, it began holding regular seasons of concerts and operas at the Teatro Bradesco São Paulo, which became the orchestra's main venue. Since then, it has presented major operatic works in complete productions, such as Georges Bizet's Carmen, W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Puccini's La bohème, and Verdi's La traviata, with the participation of international soloists, in addition to the main symphonic repertoire, with an emphasis on 20th-century music. The orchestra also stands out for its frequent presentation of world premieres of compositions specially written for its ensemble, by the orchestra members themselves and guest composers. |
