Britta Schwarz (Contralto)

Born: 1964 - Neubrandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany

The German contralto, Britta Schwarz, first studied singing with Christa Niko at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin, then went on with Professor Christian Elsner and Professor Hartmut Zabel in Dresden.

Britta Schwarz has exploited her extensive repertoire in numerous concerts with renowned orchestras such as the Dresden Staatskapelle, Dresdner Philharmonie, Berliner Philharmoniker, Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam and Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, and conductors such as Marek Janowski, Milan Horvat, Kent Nagano, Michel Plasson, Philippe Herreweghe and Jörg-Peter Weigle.

Britta Schwarz has a marked preference for Romantic Lieder, a predilection with the Dresden pianist Camillo Radicke. Concerts and lieder recitals have taken her to most European countries, as well as to Canada, Japan and the USA. The international festivals she has participated in include the Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, the Holland Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht, the Dresden Music Festival, the MDR Summer Festival and the Passau European Weeks.

Britta Schwarz has devoted herself to Baroque music intensively for many years. As a result she has sung with famous Baroque ensembles, including the Freiburger Barockorchester, Musica Antiqua Köln, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and Cantus Cölln.

Britta Schwarz is also an acclaimed voice teacher. She teaches at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber Dresden; and since 2010, she is Guest Professor for Voice Studies at Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin. Among the singers who have studied with her and/or attended her master-classes: Alexander Bischoff (Tenor), Samir Bouadjadja (Tenor), Georg Finger (Bass-Baritone), Jennifer Gleinig (Mezzo-soprano), Isabel Jantschek (Soprano), Pascale Jonczyk (Mezzo-soprano), Philipp Kaven (Baritone), Viola Michalski (Soprano), Julienne Mbodjé (Mezzo-soprano), Lea Elisabeth Müller (Mezzo-soprano), Aneta Petrasová (Mezzo-soprano), Felix Rohleder (Bass-Baritone), Martin Schicketanz (Baritone), Maria Tosenko (Contralto), Steve Wächter (Counter-tenor).***
