Hungarian soprano, Zsófia Szabó, began her musical training at the age of seven in her native Hungary. She initially played the cello before switching to singing. She studied at the Szombathely Art High School with a focus on choral conducting. From 2015 to 2023, she studied at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, obtaining both a bachelor’s (2019) and master’s degree (2022) in Voice, as well as a master’s degree in Baroque Singing (2023). She studied singing first with Barbara Bonney and later with Christoph Strehl, Lied with Wolfgang Holzmair and Stephan Genz, and Baroque singing with Andreas Scholl.
Zsófia Szabó is a dynamic and versatile performer. Her repertoire ranges from Baroque to contemporary music and she is at home both on stage and in the concert hall. Her primary focus as a performer is to push the boundaries of expression on stage. She explores this physical expression sometimes even into dimensions where others might not dare to go.
Zsófia Szabó most recently appeared as the spirited Gwendolin in Eduard Künneke’s operetta, Herz über Bord at the Eduard-von-Winterstein-Theater in Germany. Previous roles include Belinda in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, Grilletta in Haydn's Lo speziale, and Angelo in George Frideric Handel's La resurrezione. Additionally, she has performed in several operetta evenings and concerts.
Zsófia Szabó has been a permanent member of the Salzburg-based ensemble, BachWerkVokal Salzburg, since 2016. Her work with the ensemble encompasses countless concerts across Europe and several CD recordings. Despite being primarily focused on J.S. Bach's oeuvre and Baroque music, the ensemble also ventures into contemporary music.
A passionate interpreter of contemporary music, Zsófia Szabó has been heard in several innovative modern music projects. She created the role of Annika Settergren in the world premiere of Urban Östlund’s children’s opera, Pippi Langstrumpf and Belinda in Henry Fourès Elissa, based off Purcell's Dido and Aneas. In 2022, she completed a master-class with German composer, Helmut Lachenmann, where she performed his chamber work temA. With Kammeroper Salzburg, she has taken part in scenic installations such as Echo System - Things Left Unsaid and in their recent Improv Night 2023, where she improvised opera scenes in front of a live audience. She currently lives in Salzburg, Austria. |
