The Opéra Royal du Château de Versailles presents one hundred performances each musical season, graced by great names and international performers on its prestigious stage. On the strength of these prestigious concerts, the Orchestra of the Opéra Royal was created in december 2019 in Versailles for the production of John Corigliano's opera The Ghosts of Versailles. The goal of the orchestra is to adapt to the artistic projects programmed for the Opéra Royal and its guest performers.
Comprising musicians who regularly work with leading conductors in both the Baroque and Romantic repertoires, this versatile orchestra of the Château de Versailles regularly performs at the Opéra Royal. During the 2023-2024 season, the Orchestra participated in four major new stage productions: Zingarelli's Giulietta e Romeo directed by Gilles Rico in October 2023, W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni in November 2023, the French version of W.A. Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail directed by Michel Fau in May 2024 and Antonio Vivaldi's Gloria e Imeneo in June 2024 at the Théâtre de la Reine.
The Orchestra has also undertaken a series of festival tours, including Uzès, Prades, Sablé-sur-Sarthe, Sisteron and Valloire, under the baton of violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte. The Orchestra made its debut in South Korea, with a five-concert tour that included performances at Seoul's Lotte Concert Hall. It has performed George Frideric Handel's Messiah at the Chapelle de la Trinité in Lyon and at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona.
The Orchestra accompanied sopranist Samuel Mariño at the Gstaad New Year Music Festival, in Castellon and at the Teatros del Canal in Madrid with the same program. Moreover, the Orchestra, under the direction of harpsichordist Chloé Guillebon performed a programme of François Couperin's Leçons de Ténèbres at the Castell de Peralada festival. Finally, a major tour of China is scheduled, followed by a tour of Thailand, Vietnam and Mongolia during the season 2024-2025.
The Orchestra of the Opéra Royal is an active contributor to recordings for the Château de Versailles Spectacles label. Among its many projects are recordings of arias from the great French baroque operas with the soprano Marie Perbost in Dis-moi Vénus…, A. Vivaldi's Four Seasons with Stefan Plewniak, W.A. Mozart's Bastien und Bastienne and Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's W.A.
