The American soprano and voice teacher, Kathleen Wilson, obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education and her Master of Music degree in Musicology from the University of Arizona in Tuscon, and her Master of Education degree in Vocal Pedagogy/Music Education, and her Doctor of Education degree in Vocal Pedagogy/Music Education from Teachers College, Columbia University in New York (1983-1987).
At Florida International University, Kathleen Wilson served with distinction as Professor of Voice (August 2007-January 2022) and Vice Provost for Faculty Leadership and Success (August 2019-January 2022) at Florida International University in Miami. A recognized leader in vocal pedagogy and Latin American art song, she continues to perform as a soloist and present master-classes and workshops across the USA. and Latin America, most recently in Peru, Mexico, Colombia, Australia, and Sweden.
Her publications include "Sonidos Cubanos", a CD recording by the New Music Ensemble NODUS (Innova label); "Elán: Vocal and Instrumental Music by Composers from Mexico and the USA" (North/South Consonance label); and "The Art Song in Latin America: Selected Works by 20th-Century Composers" (Pendragon Press). Her scholarly articles appear in The NATS Journal, including “The Spanish Zarzuela as Resource Material for College Opera Programs” and “Breath Support Directives Used by Singing Teachers: A Delphi Study.” She also contributed the entry on Venezuelan song to Guide to Research in the Latin American Repertoire (Indiana University Press).
Her honors include two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Voice Foundation’s Van L. Lawrence Fellowship for excellence in the teaching of singing and dedication to voice science, and a Teaching Excellence Award from the University of New Hampshire. She has served as a U.S. Arts America Visiting Professor to Colombia, a Fulbright Senior Scholar to Venezuela, and Dean of the Levine School of Music in Washington, D.C.
Kathleen Wilson currently teaches private voice (since January 2022) and serves as Vice President for Education of the Santa Fe Opera Guild. |
