History & Mission: |
The 10-year Cantatas Project.
Having already presented nine highly successful Cantata series, the Orchestra of St Cecilia continues its ambitious project of presenting to the public all 200 of J.S. Bach's surviving Church Cantatas, the majority of which had never been performed in Ireland until the Orchestra of St Cecilia began presenting ALL these materpieces starting in 2001. The project took ten years ending in 2010.
The concluding series of six Cantata concerts took place on Sunday afternoons in St Ann's church, Dawson St., Dublin, between January 24, and March 7, 2010. |
The second installment of the Bach Cantata Series, will take place in Saint Ann’s Church, Dawson Street, in February 2025.
Saint Ann’s Dawson Street has a long-lasting connection with the Bach Cantatas. Frequent Cantata concerts were given over many years from the 1970s, making them a real “thing” to do on a Sunday afternoon, and this culminated in a complete cycle performed there from 2000 to 2010, six concerts per year for 10 years, many of which were sung by the Dublin Bach Singers.
There are three concerts in this installment, all of which start at 3:30pm.
February 2: Cantatas BWV 144, 84 and 23
February 9: Cantatas BWV 2, 118 and 48
February 16: Cantatas BWV 78 and 140, and the motet Loben den Herrn
The soloists, choirs (the Dublin Bach Singers in the first and second concerts, and Continuum Youth Choir in the third), and the Marlborough Baroque Orchestra will be conducted by Blánaid Murphy. |
