History & Mission: |
The Tilford Bach Festival (“TBF”) is held annually in June at All Saints Church Tilford, near Farnham, Surrey, and at other locations in the neighbourhood. TBF specialises in performances of Baroque music using authentic instruments and orchestration.
Denys Darlow, who established the Tilford Bach Society in 1952, directed the London Handel Festival and became well known as a conductor and interpreter of 17th and 18th century music. Following the 50th Festival in 2002, Denys Darlow retired as Director. Laurence Cummings followed, and Adrian Butterfield is now the Music Director of the Society. Adrian is a very prominent Baroque violin player and teacher and performs internationally with the London Handel Players.
For the first two decades, performances at the Festival drew heavily on local musicians, amateurs as well as teachers and professionals; from the 1970's onwards, however, 'historically informed performance' came to dominate more and more, and amateur involvement gradually died out. Today the festival is an entirely professional event and specialises in performances of Baroque music using authentic instruments and orchestration.
Tilford Bach Festival is the working name of the Tilford Bach Society, registered charity number 230601. |
