Arnold Ludwig Mendelssohn was a German composer and music pedagogue, son of the cousin of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. He studied first law in Tübingen; however from 1877 he started to study music in Berlin.
In 1880 Arnold Ludwig Mendelssohn became organist and university music teacher in Bonn; in 1882 music director in Bielefeld; in 1885 teacher at the Konservatorium in Köln; and in 1891 Gymnasium music teacher and church music master in Darmstadt. From 1912 he taught at the am Hoch'schen Konservatorium in Frankfurt am Main, where Paul Hindemith was among his pupils. In 1919 he became a member of the Berlin Akademie der Künste (Academy of Art). He wrote chamber music, three operas and choral works. With Mendelssohn's sacred choral music began the renewal of Evangelist church music. |
