Arias & Variations, Capriccios BWV 989-994 - Discography |
Aryeh Oron wrote (March 18, 2007):
Following previous discographies of Bach's solo keyboard works, I have added now a comprehensive discography of the Arias & Variations & Capriccios BWV 989-994. AFAIK, this is the first ever web-discography of this group of works.
This is a mixed bag of works, which includes the relatively popular: Aria & Variations in the Italian Style (Aria variata alla maniera Italiana) BWV 989 and Capriccio on the Departure of a Beloved Brother (sopra la lotananza del suo fratello dilettissimo) BWV 992, but also the almost neglected (at least in terms of recorded performances): Sarabande & Partita (Sarabande con Partite), BWV 990, Aria & Variations BWV 991, Capriccio BWV 993 and Applicatio BWV 994.
All the known recordings of these works (78 albums) are presented in a single page. You can find them all through the main page of BWV 989-994 at the BCW: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/NVD/BWV989-994.htm
If you are aware of a recording of these works not listed in the discography page, or if you find an error or missing information, please inform me, either through the BRML or to my personal e-mail address.
This is the final discography in the series of discographies of Bach's solo keyboard works. The fact that it happened on Bach's (probable?) birthday is only a coincidence, but might also be a cause for mini-celebration. All the works from BWV 772 to BWV 994, and from BWV 1072 to BWV 1087 have now comprehensive discographies at the BCW. You can find them all through the Index page: http://bach-cantatas.com/IndexNonVocal.htm
The next stage is revision and update of older discographies, including addition/completion/correction of recordings and details, which have been sent to me by concerned members during the last couple of months. I am sincerely grateful to them all. |

BCW: Discographies of the Variations & Capriccios BWV 988-994 |
Aryeh Oron wrote (August 29, 2013):
The discography pages of J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations and the Arias & Variations, Capriccios on the BCW have been updated. The discographies are arranged chronologically by recording date, a page per a decade. The discography pages are inter-linked. You can start, for example, at the last decade page (2010-2019) and go backward to pages of previous decades.
Goldberg Variations BWV 988 (563 recordings of the complete work):
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/NVD/BWV988-Rec8.htm
This is definitely the most recorded work among Bach's solo keyboard works. However, the discography includes not only recordings on keyboard instruments (harpsichord, clavichord, piano, organ, etc.) but also many arrangements for various combinations of instruments.
Arias & Variations, Capriccios BWV 989-994 (128 recordings of complete works):
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/NVD/BWV989-994-Rec8.htm
If you have any correction, addition or completion of missing details, please inform me.
With this group I have finished revising and updating all the BCW discography pages of Bach's solo keyboard works BWV 772-994. |

musica Dei donum (27 July 2020) |
Geoffrey Keen wrote (July 27, 2020):
I have an old CD of Rosalyn Tureck playing Bach, one of the pieces being "Aria and Ten Variations in the Italian Style." It's a good piece, but it doesn't sound like Bach. There's no BWV number, not even an Anhang. I've consulted my copies of Wolff and Schulenberg to no avail. Can anyone enlighten me on it?._,_._,_ |
Aryeh Oron wrote (July 27, 2020):
[To Geoffrey Keen] The work number is BWV 989. It is an early Bach's work.
See: https://www.bach-cantatas.com/NVD/BWV989-994.htm
and the connected discography pages on the BCW.
Rosalyn Tureck recorded the work at least 5 times.

Etta Tsubouchi wrote (July 27, 2020):
[To Geoffrey Keen] I've got a copy too (love it ! )
That piece (BWV 989)was composed (ca 1709) by JS Bach when he was a teenager seeing off his soldier brother going away on a foreign military mission.
It's the only programme music he composed. |
Geoffrey Keen wrote (July 28, 2020):
[To Etta Tsubouchi] Many thanks for that. Schulenberg (The keyboard Music of J.S. Bach, 1993) does write about Aria Variata on pages 72 and 3. I think I was put off by the Italian, (what did I think, that Bach wrote the title in English? Doh!) |
