The Italian pianist, Bruno Canino, began studying the piano at the Conservatory of Naples with Vincenzo Vitale, and continued then at the Conservatory of Milan under Enzo Calace and Bruno Bettinelli, where he graduated with a degree in piano and composition. In 1956 and 1958, he won awards at the Bolzano piano competition and won a similar award in Darmstadt in 1960.
Bruno Canino has played as soloist and chamber musician for the most important music societies and festivals in Europe, the USA (where he has undertaken more than twenty tours), Canada, Japan, China, Malaysia, Russia, South America, New Zealand and Australia. He has performed as part of a piano duo with Antonio Ballista for the past 50 years and has also been a member of the chamber music ensemble Trio di Milano, with colleagues Mariana Sirbu and Rocco Filippini, for the past 40 (or 30) years. He collaborates with renowned artists such as Salvatore Accardo, Uto Ughi, Lynn Harrell, Itzhak Perlman, Viktoria Mullova and Pierre Amoyal.
As a soloist, Bruno Canino has played under conductors such as Bruno Maderna, Riccardo Muti, Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chailly, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Luciano Berio and Pierre Boulez as well as with orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia of New York, Philadelphia Orchestra, Berliner Philharmoniker, Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Orchestre National de France, Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam and Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala.
Bruno Canino is Artistic Director of the Giovini Orchestra Genovese and of the "Campus Internazionale di Musica" in Latina. In particular he has also devoted himself to contemporary music, and has developed several projects with Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, Karl-Heinz Stockhausen, György Ligeti, Bruno Maderna, Luigi Nono and Sylvano Bussotti, among others. He has had the honour of giving premiere performances of compositions by Luciano Berio, Ivan Fedele, Niccolò Castiglioni, Sylvano Bussotti, Iannis Xenakis, Wolfgang Rihm and Mauricio Kagel.
Bruno Canino has been Piano Professor at the Milan Conservatory for 24 years and Professor of Piano Master Class and Modern Chamber Music at the Bern Musikhochschule for eleven years. He has also taught master-classes in Germany, Japan, Italy, Spain, France and Switzerland, and a triennial course for advanced piano studies in Seveso (Milan). Additionally, from 1991 to 2002, he conducted piano master-classes for the Konservatorium Für Musik in Bern. He was also Music Section Director of the Venice Biennale from 1999 to 2001. He is often invited as juror in many major piano and/or chamber music competitions (Bolzano, Santander, Maryland, Graz, Vienna, Zurich, Leipzig, etc.).
Bruno Canino has recorded for the RCA, Deutsche Grammophon, Angel and Orfeo labels. His recent recordings include J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations (BWV 988), Paul Hindemith's Die Vier Temperamente, Felix Mendelssohn's compositions for cello and piano with Lynn Harrell, works by Prokofiev, Ravel and Igor Stravinsky with Viktoria Mullova (which received the Edison prize), the complete works of Alfredo Casella (Stradivarius), Béla Bartók's Sonata for two pianos and percussion with András Schiff and the Amadinda Ensemble and the first CD of the complete piano works by Debussy.
A noted composer himself, Bruno Canino has written over 30 musical works, both published and un-published for soloists, duos, trios and chamber music ensembles In 1997, he also published a book entitled, Vademecum of the chamber-music pianist. |
