Władysław Kłosiewicz (Harpsichord)

Born: December 7, 1955 - Warsaw, Poland

The Polish harpsichordist, conductor and teacher, Władysław Kłosiewicz, studied at the Warsaw Academy of Music in the keyboard class of Julitty Ślendzińskiej (graduating in 1979), and at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Sienie (honorary diploma in 1978). He was the last pupil of Ruggero Gerlin and the closest associate of Wanda Landowska. He has won many top prizes in the category of interpretation, basso continuo realisation and performance of contemporary music, awarded at the international harpsichord competitions in Paris (1981), Paris-Dijon (1983), and at the ARD competition in Munich (1984), where he received the 1st prize, while the 2nd and 3rd were not awarded.

Władysław Kłosiewicz has performed in most European countries to enthusiastic reviews. He has worked with numerous outstanding soloists, ensembles and musicologists specialising in the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music. Since 1978, he has performed with the Polish Chamber Orchestra of Jerzy Maksymiuk and the Sinfonia Varsovia. In 1984, he co-founded of the Concerto Avenna orchestra and served as the artistic director/manager in 1984-1985. He was the author and artistic manager of the first Polish realisation of the collected stage works of Claudio Monteverdi in the Warsaw Chamber Opera (1993-1996), as well as many other operatic works, such as Euridice by Jacopo Peri (stage realisation and CD recording of the first opera in history, 2000). He is Artistic director and manager of a Baroque orchestra, the Musicae Antiquae Collegium Varsoviense.

Władysław Kłosiewicz is one of the greatest artistic individualities of our times. He has a rich virtuoso technique strictly subordinated to musical expression. He feels at ease with very strong emotions in music. A very talented improviser with a thorough knowledge of Baroque, he is an unrivalled performer of works by Louis Couperin or Johann Jakob Froberger, which demand an active approach to the music content sketched by the author. The artist's realizations of continuo parts are marked by great imaginativeness and stylistic authenticity.

Władysław Kłosiewicz has recorded over 100 hours of harpsichord music for radio and television stations, as well as record companies. His most important recordings include the complete harpsichord works of François Couperin, partitas of J.S. Bach, complete works of J.F. Rameau, Johann Jakob Froberger, and sonatas of D. Scarlatti. The “J.S. Bach: the Goldberg Variations” CD (2000) recorded at Narol for the Pro Academia Narolense Foundation was awarded the Fryderyk prize in 2000.

Władysław Kłosiewicz is the founder and president of the Pro Academia Narolense Foundation. He was professor of harpsichord and Baroque music interpretation at Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Graz, Austria from 1987 to 2004, and the Fr. Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, Poland. He was a juror at the I and II Wanda Landowska International Harpsichord Competitions. In the opinion of European reviewers, he is one of today’s leading harpsichord players and conductors specialising in Baroque music.

Władysław Kłosiewicz received the 1998 Honorary Award of the Culture Foundation, and was decorated with the Gold Cross of Merit in 2001.
