Benno Schachtner (Counter-tenor)

Born: December 1, 1984 - Illertissen, Bavaria, Germany

The German counter-tenor, Benno Schachtner, sang as a boy soprano and soloist with the Ulmer Spatzen, and made with them several trips at home and abroad (including Luxembourg, Holland and Japan). He repeatedly was awarded at the competition „Jugend musiziert“ on state and federal levels (state champion in Baden-Wuerttemberg). From 2004 to 2009, he studied at the Detmold Academy of Music church music with Professor Gerhard Weinberger and 2008-2010 in the singing class of Professor Heiner Eckels. In September 2010 he joined the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in the singing class of Professor Ulrich Messthaler. Schachtner is the first counter-tenor in the history of prestigious Bach International Competition Leipzig who received the title “Bachpreisträger” and, in addition to that, the Orchestra Prize. Already in 2010 he was awarded “Best Young Singer of Nordrhein-Westfalen”.

In October 2009 Benno Schachtner performed in the tile role of George Frideric Handel's Arminio at Detmolder Konzerthaus as well as the title role in G.F. Handel's Orlando at the Landestheater Detmold. At Theater Erfurt he performed Prinz Medoro in the opera Triumph der Liebeas well as in Henry Purcell's King Arthur both in the 2010-2011 season. In 2011-2012 season he made his debut at Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin. In May 2011 he sang J.S. Bach's Cantatas with Il delirio fantastico directed by Vincent Bernhardt. In 2012-2013 he made his debut in the title role of Giulio Cesare by G.F. Handel at Theater Erfurt and at Staatstheater Braunschweig where he sang in ascenic version of G.F. Handel's Saul

Benno Schachtner is invited to sing the opening concert of this year’s (2014) Bachfest Leipzig. Before he will make his debut at International Bach Festival Seoul/Korea accompanied by the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra with Jeanne Lamon conducting. For the end of 2013-2014 season he will sing for the first time with the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra conducted by René Jacobs. Under his direction Schachtner will return to Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin in Cavalli’s Rappresentazione di anima et di corpo. Further opera engagements of 2013-2014 season include Ottone in a new production of Monteverdi’s Incoronazione di Poppea at Theater Erfurt and the revival of Triumph der Liebe at historical theatre Bad Lauchstädt. Concerts with Chorus sine nomine in Linz, Sing Akademie Frankfurt, in Dresden’s famous Frauenkirche and a solo recital at Berliner Konzerthaus complete this season’s engagements.
