The Austrian composer, pianist and music teacher, Waldemar Bloch, was born in Vienna, but moved to to Graz at an early age, and spent his school and university years in Styria. He studied composition and conducting with Roderick Mojsisovics Mojsvár, among others.
Waldemar Bloch began his musical career as a concert pianist. Since 1945 he workd as a teacher at the Landeskonservatorium of Styria; from 1956 he was professor of music theory at the Musikakademie; from 1963 at the Musikhochschule in Graz. His most famous pupils were: Franz Koringer, Karl Haidmayer, Viktor Fortin, Johann Täubl, Peter Vujica sowie Hermann Markus Preßl.
Waldemar Bloch's compositions include incidental music, many vocal works, including several Masses and numerous chorales, as well as the dramatic cantata Orpheus (1955); his 1968 oratorio Passio Domini was particularly well received. He also wrote instrumental music, piano, chamber music and numerous organ works and compositions for the accordion. He published several music-theoretical books. |
