Walter Gleißner (Composer)

Born: 1931 - Germany

The German composer, Walter Gleißner, studied at the Franz-Liszt-Hochschule in Weimar and at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt am Main, where he studied with Professor Helmut Walcha for the State Exam A for organist and choir director. His composition teachers were Professor Johann Cilensek and Professor Friedrich Zipp. After studies of musicology at the Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität in Mainz, he was awarded his doctorate for his Ph.D. dissertation on the Vespers of Johann Joseph Fux.

In 1962, Walter Gleißner was appointed as Kantor and organist at the Stiftsbasilika Aschaffenburg; in 1969, he was appointed Church Music Director (KMD). Under his direction, numerous oratorios and masses have been performed. As an organ soloist, he has performed in many churches in Germany and in Belgium, Denmark, France, Holland, Italy, Japan, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Czech Republic and Hungary.

Walter Gleißner’s compositional work includes arias, cantatas, masses, motets, organ works and pieces for solo instruments with organ accompaniment.
