Takaya Ehara (Tenor)

Born: Sapporo, Japan

The Japanese tenor, Takaya Ehara [Japanese: 荏原孝弥], graduated from the Hokkaido University of Education Iwamizawa Campus, Arts Department, Music Course, Vocal Music Major (2006-2010); also studied Arts and Culture Program and Faculty of Education. After working at the National Rossini Music Academy in Pesaro, Italy, he graduated with diploma from the Accademia d’Arte Lirica Osimo in Osimo (2012-2015). He completed the 19th class of the New National Theatre Opera Training Center. While enrolled, he received an ANA scholarship to study at the Academy of Teatro alla Scala in Milan and the Training Center of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. He graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Music, Vocal Music Major (Class of 2022).

Takaya Ehara has performed the roles of Prince Ramiro in Rossini's Cenerentola, Zorzeto in Il Campiello, Romeo in Charles Gounod's Roméo et Juliette, Don Ottavio in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, Ferrando in W.A. Mozart's Cosi fan tutte with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra in Bulgaria, D’Orville in Rossini's La scala di seta, Tamino in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Marzio in W.A. Mozart's Mitridate, re di Ponto in Italy, etc. In 2013, he sang the role of Marte in Nicola Porpora's The Garden of Esperides in Naples, and in 2015, he sang the tenor solo in Serritti’s Stabat Mater with the Baroque orchestra Pietà de’turchini, making a great contribution to the Italian revival. In concerts, he has appeared as a soloist in Dmitri Shostakovich's oratorio Song of the Forest, L.v. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, J.S. Bach's Cantata, Missa brevis in G majo, BWV 236, George Frideric Handel's Messiah, Rossini's Petite messe solennelle, C. Gounod's Missa Santa Cecilia, and W.A. Mozart's Vespere. In 2012, he sang the tenor solo in Ramirez's Missa Criolla in both Osimo and Ancona, Italy, and received high praise locally. In recent years, he has been highly praised for his performances as Tito (guest performer) in the 2022 Hokkaido Nikikai Opera production of W.A. Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito, as well as the role of Gianni in Donizetti's Gianni di Parigi at the 2023 Japan Opera Foundation Bel Canto Opera Festival.

Since May 2016, Takaya Ehara performs at New National Theatre Tokyo - Opera in Shibuya, Tokyo. He also participates as a choir member and soloist in concerts of Promusica Baroque Academy (Director: Toshiki Tsumuraya). He is the founder and director of the Baroque Vocal Ensemble Il Portafortuna ~Twisted Pearl~. He currently lives in Shibuya, Tokyo.
