Promusica Baroque Academy (Baroque Orchestra & Vocal Ensemble)

Founded: December 2020 - Tokyo, Japan

Promusica Baroque Academy (= PMBA) is an academic and professional orchestra founded by harpsichordist and basso continuo player Toshiki Tsumuraya. It is composed of young and talented original instrumentalists active both in Japan and abroad, including concert mistress Rieko Ikeda, principal cellist Toru Yamamoto, principal oboist Go Arai, and principal trumpeter Hidenori Saito.

The orchestra has been highly praised for its ambitious sponsored performances, such as the "Bunmei Kaika" performance series, where the individuality of its members shines, the performance of George Frideric Handel's Messiah featuring an elite chorus, and the 350th anniversary of Heinrich Schütz's death commemoration performance, as well as lectures by cutting-edge instructors.

The orchestra is also trusted by choirs such as the Yokohama Choral Association, CVP (Collegium Vocale Purafonte), and Corsku Biculum Tokyo.

In 2024, they will perform J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion BWV 245 to commemorate exactly 300 years since its premiere, and will also launch a new project to perform all of J.S. Bach's cantatas, with the premiere of not only the cantatas but also new commissioned works based on the same chorales.

They are the Black Ship Orchestra of the Reiwa Era in the world of Japanese early music, continuing their voyage with an insatiable spirit of inquiry that transcends the ages.
