Kantorei Halberstadt (Choir)

Founded: Halberstadt, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany

The Kantorei Halberstadt (Die Kantorei am Dom zu Halberstadt) counts about 90 people who enjoy making music. Regular concerts such as the Domfestspiele and the Christmas concert every year form the highlights of the concert programme. The concerts together with other church choirs are of a special challenge. This co-operation has already become a tradition in Halberstadt.

The repertoire ranges from classics like J.S. Bach’s Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248) and B Minor Mass (BWV 232), Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah, George Frideric Handel’s Messiah, to modern works. For example, in 2012 the choir performs Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein and Die Hirten by Matthias Drude. Since 2008, the choir regularly maintains the heritage of early Protestant music, especially the works of Michael Praetorius, who was in the employ of the Bishop of Halberstadt.

The choir is directed by choirmaster Claus-Erhard Heinrich. A chorus board takes care of organizational matters.
