The Dutch conductor, organist and music teacher, Bas van Houte, studied organ (with Jet Dubbeldam and Arie J. Keijzer) and choral conducting (with Barend Schuurman) at the Rotterdams Conservatorium (1986-1993). During this study he took an interpretation course for early Italian organ music, the Kurt Thomas (summer) course (conductor's course) and became winner of the organ competition in Gorinchem. After studying at the Rotterdams Conservatorium, he went on to study AMV/Schoolmuziek (nusic education) at the Schumann Academie: Diploma (2nd degree) via state examination and (1st degree) via the Stichting Nederlandse Vakdiplomering Muziek (2010-2011).
Bas van Houte worked at the PENTA college CSG Scala Rietvelden te Spijkenisse since (August 1994-2018). As a music teacher, he introduced the final exam subject music at Scala Rietvelden (formerly Blaise Pascal) and also the concerts by upper-level students during the breaks. Since 2009, he has been team leader and currently department leader and is therefore part of the school management.
Since 2000, Bas van Houte works as a conductor/organist in the Basiliek van de H. Liduina and .L.V. Rozenkrans in Schiedam. With the women's choir Jubilatio and the men's choir In Honorem Dei he provides decoration for the Eucharist celebrations with polyphonic Latin masses, Gregorian chants and motets. Since December 2016, he has been conducting Gloria Toonkunst Vlaardingen.
Bas van Houte is artistic director and conductor of various project choirs, including the annual performance of J.S. Bach's Matthäus-Passion BWV 244 with the Schiedams Bachkoor at the Grote or St. Janskerk in Schiedam (since 1995). Several times he gave a performance of J.S. Bach's Weihnachts-Oratorium BWV 248 at the Basiliek van de H. Liduina with the Vocaal Ensemble Basiliek Schiedam.
For several years now, together with Arjen Leistra, Bas van Houte has given a concert around All Souls' Day at the Grote or Sint Janskerk in Schiedam with a project choir and soloists, performing Gabriel Fauré's Requiem and Maurice Duruflé's Requiem. In addition, since 2015, he provides four cantata services per season with the Vocaal Ensemble Basiliek Schiedam in collaboration with the Collegium Delft at the Bethelkerk in Vlaardingen on Sunday afternoons. |
