Markus Köhler (Baritone)

Born: Leipzig, Saxony, Germany

The German baritone and singing teacher, Markus Köhler, was a member of Thomanerchor Leipzig until graduating from high school and studied singing with Professor Heidi Petzold at the Musikhochschule Carl Maria von Weber in Dresden and Professor Irmgard Hartmann Dressler the Universität der Künste Berlin. While still a student, he received a diploma at the 1981 Internationalen Robert-Schumann-Wettbewerb in Zwickau and was a prize-winner at the 1986 BDI-Wettbewerbes Das Deutsche Kunstlied in Frankfurt am Main. He subsequently attended interpretation courses with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Aribert Reimann.

As well as stage engagements, Markus Köhler has made his name especially as a concert singer and Lieder interpreter. Performances in Germany and abroad in many renowned concert halls, with well-known conductors, choruses and orchestras, and at festivals including the Berliner Festwochen, Kunstfest Weimar, Gustav-Mahler-Musikwoche in Toblach, Quedlinburger Musiksommer, Carl Loewe Festival in Szczecin and Dresdner Musikfestspiele. Radio and television recordings on RIAS, SFB, NDR, WDR, MDR and Deutschlandradio, as well as CD productions (Thorophon, Signum, CPO, Capricco, Audite) with classical and contemporary compositions reflect his wide-ranging artistic activities.
