The Mexican violinist and choral conductor, Rodrigo Lluch Sicard, gained his first conducting experience with the Baja California Sur Symphony Orchestra in his native La Paz, Mexico. He also accompanied various school ensembles for three years. In recognition of his contributions to the arts, he was awarded the Baja California State Youth Award. Under the tutelage of Cuauhtémoc Rivera, he earned his bachelor's degree in violin from the Escuela Superior de Música of the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico. There, he also studied conducting with Sebastián Cohen (and earned his PhD). During this time, he founded El Taller de la Memoria, a chamber orchestra with which he presented 20th-century and contemporary music. He refined his violin skills during three years of study with Ziyu He in Salzburg. He then earned his master's degree in Baroque violin under the guidance of Luca Giardini at the Bruno Maderna Conservatory in Cesena.
Rodrigo Lluch studied choral conducting with Jos Vermunt, wind orchestra conducting with Alex Schillings, and orchestral conducting with Jac van Steen. He recently completed his bachelor's degree in choral conducting at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague, where he studied with Krista Audere and László Nemes. In 2023, he assisted Daniel Reuss with the Side by Side Messiah project of the Orchestra of the 18th Century and leading students from the Early Music Department of The Hague Conservatory. That same year, he conducted passages from W.A. Mozart's La Finta Giardiniera at the Amstelveld Festival. He participated in workshops led by Daniel Reuss and the Laurens Choir Academy to further his choral conducting expertise.
After beginning his studies in The Hague, Rodrigo Lluch assisted Leonard Know with the Atheneum Chamber Orchestra, including their recent performance of Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story. He also collaborated on the preparations for Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5 with the Royal Conservatoire Orchestra. He assisted Adam Hickox and collaborated with the Dutch National Opera Academy, assisting Chloe Rooke in a production of W.A. Mozart's La Finta Giardiniera and Benjamin Wenzelberg in Rossini's L'occasione fa il ladro.
Over the past three years, Rodrigo Lluch has conducted several amateur choirs, including the Arnold Schoenberg Chamber Choir in Leiden and Het Nieuwe Koor (HeNK) in Rotterdam. He also broadened his vocal knowledge and mentored singing students. He took coaching lessons with Christina Domnick and assisted singing students at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague in their preparation for a project with John Adams, who conducted Louis Andriessen's De Staat with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.
With his versatile musical background as a musician and conductor, Rodrigo Lluch continues to broaden his artistic horizons and develop his academic and professional talents. In 2025, he succeeded Jos Vermunt as director of the Residentie Bachensembles in Den Haag, the Netherlands. |
