Harvey Alan (Bass)

Born: February 22, 1910 - Whistable, England
Died: January 12, 1982 - Corydon, England

The English bass, Harvey Alan, studied with Roy Henderson.

After finishing his studies he was engaged at Sadler's Wells Opera from 1947 to 1952. His roles there included Colline, Don Basilio, Zuniga, Simone (Gianni Schicchi), Alfio, the Grand Inquisitor, the Commendatore, and Cancian (I quatro rusteghi). He appeared at the Glyndebourne Festival from 1949 to 1959, singing Tom (Un ballo in maschera), Alidoro (La Cenerentola), Trulove and Padre Guardiano. In 1951 he created Mr Redburn in Billy Budd at Covent Garden. He belonged to the roster of the Welsh National Opera from 1952 to 1961, singing Sparafucile, Procida, Barbarossa (Verdi's La battaglia di Legnano), Melcthal (Guillaume Tell) and Mephistopheles (Charles Gounod and Arrigo Boito).

Harvey Alan had a dark-toned, resonant voice, especially effective as Zaccaria in Nabucco.
