Cantatas BWV 1-215
Other Vocal Works BWV 225-524, BWV 1081-1089, BWV 1127

This facility of the Bach Cantatas Website (BCW) allows you finding easily the answers to questions as: How many arias did Bach write for Soprano? What movements include alto solo with oboe? What movements were written for choir of SSATB? List of instrumental movements from cantatas (no choir or solo voices); List of movements for trio of singers; List of movements with 4 trumpets; What cantatas can be performed with tenor, bass and strings? Etc.
This facility allows searching Bach's vocal works and/or movements from them according to any required combination of voices and instruments. The facility is making use of database of 2,401 records/pages of all Bach's vocal works, including Cantatas BWV 1-215 (excluding non-Bach Cantatas), as well as other vocal works BWV 225-524, BWV 1081-1089 & BWV 1127, and all movements from them.

Search Guidelines

The Search Works/Movements facility uses the search engine provided by FreeFind.

The search is not case sensitive.

FreeFind supports Boolean searching and three types of Phrase Search!

By default the search engine tries to find works/movements that have exact matches for all of the words entered in your search query. If that fails, it then tries to locate pages that contain any words in your search query. If that happens a short message is displayed at the top of the search results indicating this has been done.

In addition, there are several ways to modify the default search behaviour.

  1. phrase search
    The search engine supports three types of phrase search.

    1. To match an exact phrase, use quotes around the phrase
      Example: "free search engine"
    2. To match a near (within a couple of words) phrase, use square brackets [around the words]
      Example: [free search engine]
    3. To match a far (within several words) phrase, use braces { around the words }
      Example: {free search engine}

  1. + and - qualifiers
    If you prepend a word with + that word is required to be on the page.
    If you prepend a word with - that word is required to not be on the page.
    Example: +always -never
  2. * wildcard
    If a query word ends with a * all words on a page which start the same way as that query word will match.
    Example: gift*
  3. ? wildcard
    If a query word contains a ? any character will match that position.
    Example: b?g
  4. Boolean search
    You can use the following Boolean operators in your search: AND, OR, NOT. These operators MUST be in capital letters.
    Example: (contact AND us) OR (about AND us)

All of these techniques can be combined: +alway* -ne??r*

Use the abbreviations in the table below, not the full words.
