Texts & English Translations of Chorales used in Bach's Vocal Works
In Progress |
|
This section of the Bach Cantatas Website (BCW) contains Chorale Texts [hereafter referred to simply as ‘CT’s] used by Bach in the cantatas and his other vocal works. Wherever possible all the verses of each chorale have been included to give the full context for the verses used by Bach. The translations provided have no other aim than providing a guide to the literal meaning of the German. Most of the texts are taken from Gesangbuch.org and Colmarisches Gesangbuch, to whom grateful acknowledgement is made for the valuable resources they generously provide. In some cases the text provided might possibly differ from that known by Bach, but it is hoped that even when this is the case the text may give the general message of the CT Bach is using.
Each CT page contains list of works/movements in which Bach used the CT, either in original or paraphrased form, including specific verse or verses, year of composition, references, etc., and the CM's used by Bach to set the music.
CT's for which we have not been able to find a text are marked in the list as 'text needed'. We would be most grateful if any one can supply any of these texts. Corrections and suggestions for improvement are also most welcome. Please send the info to us in accordance with the guidelines at: How to contribute. |
