German Text (verses in bold print set by Bach)

English Translation

1

Wer weiß, wie nahe mir mein Ende!
Hin geht die Zeit, her kommt der Tod.
Ach, wie geschwinde und behende
Kann kommen meine Todesnot!
Mein Gott, ich bitt' durch Christi Blut:
Mach's nur mit meinem Ende gut!

Who knows how near to me is my end!
Time departs, death approaches.
Ah with what speed and agility
my death agony can come!
My God, I pray through Christ’s blood,
make sure my end is good!

2

Es kann vor Nacht leicht anders werden,
Als es am frühen Morgen war;
Denn weil ich leb' auf dieser Erden,
Leb' ich in steter Todsgefahr.
Mein Gott, ich bitt' durch Christi Blut:
Mach's nur mit meinem Ende gut!

Before night things can so easily change
from what they were in the early morning;
for while I live on this earth
I am in constant danger of death.
My God, I pray through Christ’s blood,
make sure my end is good

3

Herr, lehr mich stets mein End' bedenken
Und, wenn ich einstens sterben muß,
Die Seel' in Jesu Wunden senken
Und ja nicht sparen meine Buss'!
Mein Gott, ich bitt' durch Christi Blut:
Mach's nur mit meinem Ende gut!

Lord, teach me to think of my end always
and when some day I must die,
teach me to cast my soul down in Jesus’ wounds
and to spare nothing in my penance!
My God, I pray through Christ’s blood,
make sure my end is good

4

Grant that in good time I may set my house in order
so that I am ready always
and can say confidently in all circumstances:
Lord, as you wish, deal with me !
My God, I pray through Christ’s blood,
make sure my end is good!

5

Mach mir stets zuckersüß den Himmel
Und gallenbitter diese Welt:
Gib, daß mir in dem Weltgetümmel
Die Ewigkeit sei vorgestellt!
Mein Gott, ich bitt' durch Christi Blut:
Mach's nur mit meinem Ende gut!

Make heaven always as sweet as sugar for me
and this world as bitter as gall:
Grant that in the turmoil of the world
eternity may be set before me!
My God, I pray through Christ’s blood,
make sure my end is good

6

Ach Vater, deck all meine Sünde
Mit dem Verdienste Christi zu,
Darein ich mich fest gläubig winde;
Das gibt mir recht erwünschte Ruh'.
Mein Gott, ich bitt' durch Christi Blut:
Mach's nur mit meinem Ende gut!

Ah Father , cover all my sins
with the merit of Christ,
which with firm faith I wind around me,
this gives me truly the peace for which I long.
My God, I pray through Christ’s blood,
make sure my end is good

7

Ich weiß, in Jesu Blut und Wunden
hab ich mir recht und wohl gebett ;
da find ich Trost in Todesstunden,
und alles, was ich gerne hätt.
Mein Gott, ich bitt' durch Christi Blut:
Mach's nur mit meinem Ende gut!

I know that in Jesus’ blood and wounds
it is right and good for me to make my bed;
there may I find consolation in the hour of death
and everything I would happily have.
My God, I pray through Christ’s blood,
make sure my end is good

8

Nichts ist, was mich von Jesu scheide,
Nichts, es sei Leben oder Tod.
Ich leg' die Hand in seine Seite
Und sage: Mein Herr und mein Gott!
Mein Gott, ich bitt' durch Christi Blut:
Mach's nur mit meinem Ende gut!

There is nothing that can separate me from Jesus,
nothing, either in life or death.
I place my hand in his side
and say: My Lord and my God!
My God, I pray through Christ’s blood,
make sure my end is good

9

Ich habe Jesum angezogen
Schon längst in meiner heil'gen Tauf';
Du bist mir auch daher gewogen,
Hast mich zum Kind genommen auf.
Mein Gott, ich bitt' durch Christi Blut:
Mach's nur mit meinem Ende gut!

I have put on Jesus
long ago in my holy baptism;
in this also you have been kindly disposed to me,
you have accepted me as your child.
My God, I pray through Christ’s blood,
make sure my end is good

10

Ich habe Jesu Fleisch gegessen,
Ich hab' sein Blut getrunken hier;
Nun kann er meiner nicht vergessen,
Ich bleib' in ihm und er in mir.
Mein Gott, ich bitt' durch Christi Blut:
Mach's nur mit meinem Ende gut!

I have eaten Jesus’ body,
I have drunk his blood;
now he cannot forget me,
I remain in him and he in me.
My God, I pray through Christ’s blood,
make sure my end is good

11

So komm' mein End' heut' oder morgen,
Ich weiß daß mir's mit Jesu glückt;
Ich bin und bleib' in seinen Sorgen,
Mit Jesu Blut schön ausgeschmückt.
Mein Gott, ich bitt' durch Christi Blut:
Mach's nur mit meinem Ende gut!

Therefore my end may come today or tomorrow,
I know that with Jesus it will turn out well for me;
I am and remain in his care,
fairly adorned with Christ’s blood:
My God, I pray through Christ’s blood,
make sure my end is good

12

Ich leb' indes in Gott vergnüget
Und sterb' ohn alle Kümmernis;
Mir g'nüget, wie es mein Gott füget,
Ich glaub' und bin es ganz gewiß:
Durch deine Gnad' und Christi Blut:
Machst du's mit meinem Ende gut!

Meanwhile I live content in God
and die without any anxiety;
I am content with what God ordains,
I believe and am fully confident:
through your mercy and Christ’s blood
you will make sure that my end is good!
