German Text (verses in bold print set by Bach)

English Translation

1. In allen meinen Taten
laß ich den Höchsten raten,
der alles kann und hat;
er muß zu allen Dingen,
soll's anders wohl gelingen,
mir selber geben Rat und Tat.

In all that I do
I am led by God’s counsel,
who can do all and owns all;
in everything he must give,
if it is to turn out well,
his own advice and counsel to me

2. Nichts ist es spät und frühe
um alle meine Mühe,
mein Sorgen ist umsonst;
er mag's mit meinen Sachen
nach seinem Willen machen,
ich stell's in seine Gunst.

Early or late nothing comes
from all my efforts,
my anxiety is in vain;
he may deal with my affairs
according to his will,
I entrust them to his care.

3. Es kann mir nichts geschehen,
als was er hat ersehen
und was mir selig ist.
Ich nehm es, wie er's gibet;
was ihm von mir beliebet,
dasselbe hab auch ich erkiest.

Nothing can happen to me
except what he has foreseen
and what is a blessing for me.
I take as he gives;
what to him is pleasing from me
is the very thing I choose also myself.

4. Ich traue seiner Gnaden,
die mich vor allem Schaden,
vor allem Übel schützt;
leb ich nach seinen Sätzen,
so wird mich nichts verletzen,
nichts fehlen, was mir ewig nützt.

I trust in his grace
that from all harm,
from all evil protects me;
if I live according to his laws,
then there is nothing to harm me,
nothing lacking that is useful for me.

5. Er wolle meiner Sünden
in Gnaden mich entbinden,
durchstreichen meine Schuld;
er wird auf solch Verbrechen
nicht stracks das Urteil sprechen
und haben noch mit mir Geduld.

May it be his will from my sins
in his mercy to release me,
to cancel out my guilt;
on my transgressions
he will not pronounce a harsh sentence
and he will still have patience with me.

6. Leg ich mich späte nieder,
Erwache frühe wieder,
Lieg und ziehe fort,
In Schwachheit und in Banden,
Und was mir stößt zuhanden,
So tröstet mich sein Wort.

Whether I lie down late
or wake up early,
whether I stay in or go out,
in weakness and in bondage,
whatever happens to confront me,
yet his word is my consolation

7. Hat er es denn beschlossen,
So will ich unverdrossen
An mein Verhängnis gehn!
Kein Unfall unter allen
Soll mir zu harte fallen,
Ich will ihn überstehn.

If it is his decision,
then I will go undeterred
to meet my fate!
No misfortune whatsoever
shall be too harsh for me,
I shall overcome it

8. Ihm hab ich mich ergeben
zu sterben und zu leben,
sobald er mir gebeut;
es sei heut oder morgen,
dafür laß ich ihn sorgen,
er weiß allein die rechte Zeit

To him I have entrusted myself
in dying and in living,
whenever he bids me;
whether it may be today or tomorrow
I leave to his care,
he alone knows the right time.

9. So sei nun, Seele, deine
und traue dem alleine,
der dich geschaffen hat.
Es gehe, wie es gehe,
dein Vater in der Höhe,
weiß allen Sachen Rat

Therefore, my soul, be true to yourself
and trust him alone
who has created you.
Come what may,
your Father in heaven
knows what is best in all situations
