German Text (verses in bold print set by Bach)

English Translation

1

Das neugeborne Kindelein,
Das herzeliebe Jesulein,
Bringt abermal ein neues Jahr
Der auserwählten Christenschar.

The new-born little child,
the dearly loved little Jesus
brings once more a new year
to the chosen band of Christians.

2

Des freuen sich die Engelein,
Die gerne um und bei uns sein,
Sie singen in den Lüften frei,
Daß Gott mit uns versöhnet sei.

In this rejoice the angels,
who are willingly around and with us,
they sing freely in the air
that God is reconciled with us.

3

Ist Gott versöhnt und unser Freund,
Was mag uns tun der arge Feind?
Trotz Türken, Papst und Höllen Pfort,
Das Jesulein ist unser Hort!

If God is reconciled and our friend,
what can the evil enemy do to us?
Despite Turks, the Pope and the gates of hell, little Jesus is our stronghold.

4

Es bringt das rechte Jubeljahr,
Was trauern wir dann immerdar?
Frisch auf, es ist itzt Singens Zeit!
Das Jesulein wendt alles Leid!

He brings the true year of rejoicing,
why should we ever mourn?
Up quickly, it is now time to sing!
Dear little Jesus changes all suffering!
