Chorale Texts used in Bach's Vocal Works
O Jesu, meine Lust
Text and Translation of Chorale

Ref. in hymnals/hymn books:
Author: Matthäus Avenarius (1673)
Chorale Melody: O Gott, du frommer Gott - Melody 3 ((Zahn 5206b)) | Composer: Ahasverus Fritsch (1679), based on Adam Krieger (1657)
Theme: Death & Eternity

Description:

Hymn by Matthäus Avenarius, in 6 8-line stanzas (1673). Melody by Anon (1679), to 'Die wollust dieser Welt'. The hymn was first published (to no specified melody) in Heinrich Ammersbach’s Vermehrtes Gesang-Buchlein (Halberstadt, 1673). Its proper melody dates from 1677 and appears to have been little used. M. Avenarius’ Hymn is set to “O Gott, du frommer Gott,” in Wagner (1697).

English Translation

1. O Jesu, meine Lust,
O Leben meiner Seelen!
Wann rufst du mich herfür
Aus dieser Trauerhöhlen?
Wann werd' ich einst befreit
Dich, liebster Jesu, sehn
Und zu dir in dein Reich
Mit vollem Springen gehn? (a)

1. O Jesu, Master mine,
Thou essence of my being,
When shall I hear Thy call
That summons me to heaven?
When shall my longing eyes
Thy countenance behold,
And in Thy house above
These arms my Lord enfold ?

2. O du mein Aufenthalt,
Mein Leben, meine Wonne,
Mein einziger Gewinn
Und rechte Freudensonne!
Mein Herz und ganzer Geist
Schreit stets, o Gott, zu dir!
Wann werd' ich schauen dich,
O Jesu, meine Zier!

2. Thou art my soul's abode,
My Hope and joy surpassing.
In heaven I'd be with Thee
In glory everlasting.
My heart and spirit call
To Thee, O Lord, on high:
When shall I see Thy face
And join Thee in the sky?

3. Ich denk an jene Zeit,
Wenn ich zu deinen Freuden,
Herr Jesu, werd eingehen,
Nach lange währn'dem Leiden.
Welch' große Freud' und Lust
Wird dann bei mir entstehn,
Wenn ich in deinem Licht
Dich ewig werde sehn?

4. Alsdenn so wirst du mich
Zu deiner Rechten stellen,
Und mir, als deinem Kind,
Ein gnädig' Urteil fällen,
Mich bringen zu der Lust,
Wo deine Herrlichkeit
Ich werde schauen an
In alle Ewigkeit.

4. For Thou hast promised, Lord,
On Thy right hand to place me;
With all a father's love
One day Thou wilt embrace me
In heaven, where Thou art,
Enthroned above the sky,
And in Thy sight I'll stand
For all eternity.

5. Ach, dass ich heute noch
Von hinnen möchte scheiden
Und das ich käme bald
Zu jenen Himmelsfreuden.
Ach, dass ich heute noch
Die Welt verlassen müsst,
Und käme in das Schloss,
Wo nichts als Freude ist.

6. O du mein liebster Schatz!
Wann wirst du mich hinführen
Zu solcher Herrlichkeit
Und mit der Wonne zieren,
Die du mir hast bereit',
Wann küss ich deine Brust
In jenem Freudensaal?
O, Jesu, meine Lust!

(a) Ausdruck der Freude
