English Translation

1

Treuer Gott, ich muß dir klagen
meines Herzens Jammerstand ;
ob dir wol sind meine Plagen
besser, als mir selbst, bekannt !
Grosse Schwachheit ich bey mir
in Anfechtung oftmal spür,
wenn der Satan allen Glauben
will aus meinem Herzen rauben.

Faithful God, I must lament to you
the miserable state of my heart,
even though my troubles are
better known to you than to myself!
Within myself great weakness
I often feel in temptation
when Satan wants to steal
all faith from my heart.

2

Du, Gott, dem nichts ist verborgen,
weißt, daß ich nichts von mir hab,
nichts von allen meinen Sorgen,
alles ist, Herr, deine Gab.
Was ich Gutes find an mir,
das hab ich allein von dir,
auch den Glauben mir und allen
giebst du, wie dirs mag gefallen.

You God, from whom nothing is hidden,
know that I have nothing of myself,
nothing for all my cares,
everything is, Lord, your gift.
Whatever good I find in myself
I have received from you,
even faith to me and everyone
you give, as it pleases you.

3

O mein Gott, vor den ich trete
itzt in meiner grossen Noth ;
höre, wie ich sehnlich bete,
laß mich werden nicht zu Spott !
Mach zu nicht des Teufels Werk,
meinen schwachen Glauben stärk,
daß ich nimmermehr verzage,
Christum stets im Herzen trage.

O my God, before whom I come
now in my great distress,
listen, as I pray with longing,
let me not be put to scorn!
Bring to nothing the devil’s work,
strengthen my weak belief,
so that I shall never despair
but always bear Christ in my heart.

4

Jesu, Brunnquell aller Gnaden,
der du niemand von dir stößst,
der mit Schwachheit ist beladen,
sondern deine Jünger tröst :
sollt ihr Glaube auch so klein
wie ein kleines Senfkorn seyn,
wolltst du sie doch würdig schätzen
grosse Berge zu versetzen.

Jesus , source of all mercy,
you drive away from you no one
who is burdened with weakness,
but comfort your followers:
even if their faith were as tiny
as a little mustard seed,
you would still consider it worthy
to move great mountains.

5

Laß mich Gnade vor dir finden,
der ich bin voll Traurigkeit ;
hilf du mir [171] selbst überwinden,
so oft ich muß in den Streit.
Meinen Glauben täglich mehr,
und des Geistes Schwert verehr,
damit ich den Feind kann schlagen,
alle Pfeile von mir jagen.

May I who am full of sorrow
fnd mercy from you;
help me to overcome myself
as I must often do in my struggle.
Increase my faith from day to day
and give me the sword of the spirit
with which I can strike the foe
and drive all his arrows away from me.

6

Heilger Geist ins Himmels Throne,
Gleicher Gott von Ewigkeit
Mit dem Vater und dem Sohne,
Der Betrübten Trost und Freud!
Allen Glauben, den ich find ,
Hast du in mir angezündt,
Über mir in Gnaden walte,
Ferner deine Gnad erhalte.

Holy spirit on the throne of heaven,
equal God from eternity
with the Father and the Son,
comfort and joy of the afflicted!
All the faith I can find
you have kindled within me.
Rule over me in mercy,

maintain your mercy in the future.

7

Deine Hilfe zu mir sende,
O du edler Herzensgast!
Und das gute Werk vollende,
Das du angefangen hast.
Blas in mir das Fünklein auf,

Bis daß nach vollbrachtem Lauf
Ich den Auserwählten gleiche
Und des Glaubens Ziel erreiche.

Send your help to me,
o you noble guest of my heart!
and complete the good work
that you have begun.
Kindle within me the little spark
until, after I have completed the course of my life,

I may be like those you have chosen
nd reach the goal of faith.

8

Gott, groß über alle Götter,
heilige Dreyeinigkeit !
Ausser dir ist kein Erretter,
hilf, itzt ist es Helfenszeit :
da der Feind die Pfeil abdrückt,
meine Schwachheit mir aufrückt,
will mir allen Trost verschlingen,
und mich in Verzweiflung bringen.

God, great beyond all gods,
holy Trinity!
Besides you there is no deliverer,
help, now is the time for help:
for the enemy lets fly his arrows,
reproaches me with my weakness,
wants to devour all that comforts me
and to bring me into despair

9

Zeuch du mich aus jedem Stricke,
die er mir geleget hat ;
laß ihm fehlen seine Tücke,
drauf er sinnet früh und spat !
Gieb Kraft, daß ich allen Strauß
ritterlich mag stehen aus,
und, so oft als ich muß kämpfen,
hilf mir meine Feinde dämpfen !

Pull me out of the snare
that he has laid for me;
let his malice fail
which he plots early and late!
Give me strength,
so that all the struggle may gallantly endure
and, whenever I have to fight,
help me to conquer my enemies.

10

Reiche deinem schwachen Kinde,
das auf matten Füßen steht,
deine Gnadenhand geschwinde ;
bis die Angst vorüber geht :
wie die Jugend gängle mich,
daß der Feind nicht rühme sich,
er hab solches Herz gefället,
das auf dich sein Hofnung stellet.

Reach out to your feeble child,
who stands on weary feet,
your merciful hand in haste,
until my anguish has passed:
lead me along like a child
so that the enemy may not boast
that he has overthrown a heart
that places its hope in you.

11

Du bist meine Hilf und Leben,
mein Fleiß, meine Zuversicht,
dem ich Leib und Seel ergeben,
Gott, mein Gott, verzeuch doch nicht :
eile mir zu stehen bey,
brich des Feindes Pfeil entzwey ;
laß ihn selbst zurücke prallen,
und mit Schimpf zur Hölle fallen.

You are my help and life,
my diligence, my confidence,
to whom I devote my body and soul,
God, my God , do not withdraw :
hurry to stand by me,
break in two the arrows of the enemy,
let him in turn be hurled back
and ignominiously fall down to hell.

12

Ich will alle meine Tage
Rühmen deine starke Hand,
Daß du meine Plag und Klage
Hast so herzlich abgewandt.
Nicht nur in der Sterblichkeit
Soll dein Ruhm sein ausgebreit':
Ich wills auch hernach erweisen
Und dort ewiglich dich preisen.

All my days I shall
praise your mighty hand
because by you my trouble and distress
have been turned aside with such love.
Not only in this mortal life
should your glory be spread abroad:
I want to bear witness to it hereafter also
and there for ever praise you.
