English Translation

1. Vor Freuden laßt uns springen,
ihr Christen allzugleiche,
mit Mund und Herzen singen,
denn Christ' vom Himmelreiche
von einer Jungfrau ist gebor'n,
wer hat zuvor gehört von solchen Dingen.

1. Good Christians all, rejoice ye,
With hearts and voices singing
For Christ, in heaven's full glory,
Is now among us dwelling,
The Offspring of a virgin's womb!
Hath e'er been heard on earth such news excelling?

2. Der allem Fleisch bescheret
sein Speis von's Himmelsthrone,
daßelb' erhält und nähret,
der ewig Gottessohne,
von einer Jungfrau ist gebor'n,
ei wie gar freundlich er sich zu uns kehret.

2. He Who all flesh provideth
With daily fare in plenty
Himself as mortal liveth.
The Son of God Almighty
A virgin's babe now is He born.
How great must be the love for us He beareth!

3. Dem armen, kleinen Kinde,
dem nichts ist zu vergleichen
muß Meer und alle Winde,
mit Furcht und Zittern weichen,
ihm dienen alle Engelein,
vor ihm erschrickt der Teuf(e)l mit sein'm Gesinde.

3. This Infant, poor and holy,
Beyond all others precious,
Doth rule the winds so mighty
And tames the seas tempestuous.
The angel hosts Him serve with awe,
Proud Satan and his hosts in fear bend lowly.

4. Wann wollt ihr euch bekehren
zu ihm ihr lieben Leute,
weil er's ja tut begehren
und ruft euch auch noch heute?
Wie meint er's doch recht herzlich gut
und ihr wollet euch noch desselben wehren!

5. Tut euch zu ihm doch finden,
laßt ihn umsonst nicht rufen,
steht ab von euren Sünden,
weil noch die Tür ist offen
so werd't ihr zeitlich hie und dort
den Teufel und all's Unglück überwinden.

5. Good Christians, then, approach ye,
Nor let Him call you vainly
Put every sin far from ye
While still the time is ready!
So shall you strength and grace receive,
While Satan and misfortune ne'er shall daunt ye.

6. Herr Christ, den rechten Samen,
erhalt bei uns auf Erden,
zu ehr'n dein' heil'gen Namen,
daß wir dein' Kinder werden!
Verleih', daß uns die Menschheit dein
helfe zu dir hinauf mit Freuden! Amen.
