German Text (verses in bold print set by Bach)

English Translation

1

Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir
Und sollen billig danken dir
Für dein Geschöpf der Engel schön,
Die um dich schweb'n vor deinem Thron.

Lord God, we all praise you
and must rightly thank you
for your beautiful creation of the angels
who hover about you before your throne.

2

Sie glänzen hell und leuchten klar
Und sehen dich ganz offenbar,
Dein' Stimm' sie hören allezeit
Und sind voll göttlicher Weisheit.

They shine brightly and glow clearly
and see you completely openly,
and hear your voice always
and are full of divine wisdom.

3

Sie feiern auch und schlafen nicht,
Ihr Fleiß ist gar dahin gericht't,
Daß sie, Herr Christe, um dich sei'n
Und um dein armes Häufelein.

They also worship you and do not sleep,
their zeal has this purpose,
to be with you,Lord Christ
and with your poor little flock.

4

Der alte Drach' und böse Feind
Vor Neid, Haß und vor Zorne brennt;
Sein Dichten steht allein darauf,
Wie von ihm werd' zertrennt dein Hauf'.

The old dragon and wicked enemy
Burns with envy, hate and rage;
his aim is always one thing,
that your flock may be torn apart by him.

5

Und wie er vormals bracht' in Not
Die Welt, führt er sie noch in Tod;
Kirch', Wort, Gesetz, all' Ehrbarkeit
Zu tilgen, ist er stets bereit.

And as he once brought the world
into distress, now he still leads it to death;
he is always ready to destroy
church, gospel, law, decency.

6

Darum kein' Rast noch Ruh' er hat,
Brüllt wie ein Löw', tracht't früh und spat,
Legt Garn und Strick, braucht falsche List,
Daß er verderb', was christlich ist.

Therefore he has no rest or peace,
he roars like a lion, he seeks his prey early and late, lays snares and traps, uses false cunning,so that he may destroy what is Christian

7

Indes wachet der Engel Schar,
Die Christo folgen, immerdar
Und schützet deine Christenheit,
Wehret des Teufels Listigkeit.

However the host of angels,
who follow Christ, keeps watch always
and protects your Christendom
and defends us from the devil’s cunning.

8

Am Daniel wir lernen das,
Da er unter den Löwen saß,
Desgleichen auch dem frommen Lot
Der Engel half aus aller Not.

From Daniel we learn this,
when he sat among the lions,
likewise from the righteous Lot
who was helped by the angel in all his troubles

9

Dermaßen auch des Feuers Glut
Verschont und keinen Schaden thut
Den Knaben in der heißen Flamm,
Der Engel ihn zu Hilfe kam.

In this way the fire’s blaze
spared and did no harm
to the boys in the hot flames,
the angel came to their aid.

10

Also schützt Gott noch heutzutag'
Vor Übel und gar mancher Plag'
Uns durch die lieben Engelein,
Die uns zu Wächtern geben sein.

And so still today God protects us
from evil and many troubles
through the dearly beloved angels,
who have been given to us as guardians.

11

Darum wir billig loben dich
Und danken dir, Gott, ewiglich,
Wie auch der lieben Engel Schar
Dich preiset heut' und immerdar.

Therefore we freely praise you
and thank you ,God, for ever,
as the beloved host of angels
also praises you today and always.

12

Und bitten dich, wollst allezeit
Dieselben heißen sein hereit,
Zu schützen deine kleine Herd,
So hält dein göttlich Wort in Wert.

And we ask that it may always be your will
to command them to be ready
to protect your little flock
that keeps as precious your divine word.
