Description: “Nun sich der Tag geendet hat” (Now the day has ended) is an Evening Hymn in composite text of nine 4-line stanzas of composer Adam Krieger (1634-1666), Stanza 1 (1665); Johann Friedrich Hertzog (1647-1699, Stanzas 2-7 and 9 (1622); and a Leipzig addition, Stanza 8 (1693), set to the Adam Krieger melody (1665, Zahn 212, Neu Arien) but not found in the NLGB. J.S. Bach set this prayer of protection and acceptance as a plain chorale, BWV 396 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDnvgL8rGzM). It is found in the Lutheran Hymnal as “Now that the day has reached its close.”

1.[1]. Nun sich der Tag geendet hat
Und keine Sonn mehr scheint.
Schläft alles, was sich abgematt'
Und was zuvor geweint.

1. Now that the day has reached its close,
The sun doth shine no more,
In sleep the toil-worn find repose
And all who wept before.

2.[2], Nur du, mein Gott, hast keine Rast,
Du schläfst noch schlummerst nicht;
Die Finsternis ist dir verhasst,
Weil du bist selbst das Licht.

2. But Thou, my God, dost never sleep,
For Thou Thyself art Light;
No darkness, howsoever deep,
Can dim Thy perfect sight.

3.[3]. Gedenke, Herr, doch auch an mich |
In dieser schwarzen Nacht
Und schenke du mir gnädiglich
Den Schutz von deiner Wacht.

3. Therefore, O Lord, remember me
Throughout the gloom of night,
Protect Thou me most graciously
And shield me with Thy might.

[4]. Wend ab des Satans Wütherei
durch deiner Engel Schaar,
so bin ich aller Sorgen frei
und bringt mir nichts Gefahr.

4. Keep satan's fury far from me
By many an angel arm;
Then shall I be from worry free
And safe from every harm.

4.[5] Zwar fühl ich wohl der Sünden Schuld,
Die mich bei dir klagt an;
Ach, aber deines Sohnes huld
Hat gnung für mich getan.

5. I know the evil I have done
Doth cry aloud to Thee;
But yet in mercy Thy dear Son
Hath full atoned for me.

5.[6]. Den setz ich dir zum Bürgen ein,
Wenn ich muss vors Gericht;
Ich kann ja nicht verloren sein
In solcher Zuversicht.

6. In Him accepted I shall be
When suppliant at Thy feet,
He is my Surety and my Plea
Before Thy judgment-seat.

6.[8] Weicht, nichtige Gedanken, hin,
Wo ihr habt euren Lauf,
Ich baue jetzt in meinem Sinn
Gott einen Tempel auf.

7. And so I close my weary eyes,
Sweet peace within my breast,
Why toss about in fears or sighs?
God watches while I rest.

7.[7]. Drauf tu ich meine Augen zu
Und schlafe fröhlich ein,
Mein Gott wacht jetzt in meiner Ruh;
Wer wollt doch traurig sein?

8. Away, vain, idle thoughts, depart!
Roam not, my soul, abroad!
For now I build within my heart
A temple to my God.

8.[9]. Soll diese Nacht die letzte sein
In diesem Jammertal,
So führ mich, Herr, in' Himmel ein
Zur Auserwählten Zahl.

9. Should this night prove the last for me
In this sad vale of cares,
Then lead me, Lord, to dwell with Thee
And all Thy chosen heirs.

9.[10] Und also leb und sterb ich dir,
Du Herre Zebaoth;
Im Tod und Leben hilfst du mir
Aus aller Angst und Not.

10. And thus I live and die to Thee,
Strong Lord of hosts indeed.
In life, in death, deliver me
From every fear and need.
