Seelenbräutigam
Text and Translation of Chorale

Ref. in hymnals/hymn books:
Author: Adam Drese (1697)
Chorale Melody: Seelenbräutigam (Zahn 3255) | Composer: Adam Drese (?) (1698)
Theme: Jesus Hymn; Loving & Friendly God

Description:

"Seelenbräutigam, Jesu, Gotteslamm!" (Soul's bridegroom, Jesus, God's Lamb) is an Adam Drese Jesus Hymn of 15 six-line stanzas set to the associated melody (Zahn 3255), first published in Geistreiches Gesang-Buch (Halle, 1697), then in the Darmstadt Geist-reiches Gesang-Buch, 1698 and the Freylinghausen Gesang-Buch, 1704. In Wagner's Gesang-Buch (Leipzig 1697, iii: 420), it begins, "Jesu, Gottes Lamm." It makes numerous references to Jesus in pietist terms of "Lamb" and "Bridegroom" as well as the traditional "Hero From David's tribe" and "Prince of Peace" In English its title is "Jesus, still lead on" (https://hymnary.org/text/jesus_still_lead_on). Bach set the hymn as a plain chorale, BWV 409 http://www.bach-chorales.com/BWV0409.htm, and as a two-part sacred song setting in Schmelli Songbook (No. 472, Loving & Friendly God), BWV 496 (http://www.bach-chorales.com/SchemelliRealizations.htm, https://i.ytimg.com/vi/hjhHQ0I8zNs/maxresdefault.jpg (music https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoZ48u9pmsw). The Schmelli also has a Christmas Song that refers to the Seelen Bräutigam: "O Fürstenkind aus Jakobs Stamm, o meiner Seelen Bräutigam" (O child of princes from the tribe of Jacob, bridegroom of my soul), points out Markus Rathey.

German Text (verses in bold print set by Bach)

English Translation

1. Seelenbräutigam,
Jesu, Gotteslamm!
Habe Dank für deine Liebe,
Die mich zieht aus reinem Triebe
Von dem Sündenschlamm,
Jesu, Gottes Lamm.

1. Bridegroom, all mine own,
Jesu, God's dear Son,
Take my heart for all Thy loving,
All Thy care and wise protecting
From sin's scars and shame,
Jesu, God's dear Son!

2. Deine Liebes Glut
Licht stärket Mut und Blut,
Wend nu freundlich mich anblickest
uUd an deine Brust mich drückest,
Macht mich wohlgemut
Deine Liebes Glut.

2. Thy love all divine
Doth enkindle mine.
When Thy friendly glance is on me,
And upon Thy breast Thou fold'st me,
All my heart'saflame
With Thy love divine.

3. Wahrer Mensch und Gott,
Tost in Not und Tod,
Du bist darum Mensch geboren,
Zu ersetzen, was verloren,
Durch dein Blut so rot,
Wahrer Mensch und Gott.

3. Jesu, God and Man,
Lived on earth a span,
Came from heaven to dwell among us,
And salvation sure has won us.
Red Thy life-blood ran,
Jesu, God and Man!

4. Meines Glaubens Licht
Lass verlöschen nicht,
Salbe mich mit Freudenöle,
Dass hinfort in meiner Seele
Ja verlösche nicht
Mienes Glaubens Licht.

4. Clear and holy Light,
Ever shine Thou bright!
With the oil of faith anoint me
That I ne'er may disappoint Thee,
Shining clear and bright,
Clear and Holy Light !

5. So werd ich in dir
Bleiben für und für,
Deine Liebe will ich ehren
Und in dir dein Lob vermehren,
Weil ich für und für
Bleiben werd in dir.

5. In Thee, Lord, l'd bide,
Ever in Thee hide,
Thy dear love for ever telling,
Sing Thy praise and might excelling,
While in Thee 1 hide,
Ever in Thee bide.

6. Held aus Davids Stamm,
deine Liebesflamm
mich ernähre, und verwehre,
dass die Welt mich nicht versehre,
ob sie mir gleich gram,
Held aus Davids Stamm.

6. Lion of David's stem,
Send Thy Spirit's flame.
Never let my soul be wounded,
Be in earth's fell snares confounded,
Nor be put to shame,
Lion of David's stem!

7. Großer Friedensfürst,
wie hast du gedürst
nach der Menschen Heil und Leben
und dich in den Tod gegeben,
da du riefst: Mich dürst',
großer Friedensfürst.

8. Deinen Frieden gib
aus so reiner Lieb,
uns, den Deinen, die dich kennen
und nach dir sich Christen nennen,
denen bist du lieb,
deinen Frieden gib.

9. Wer der Welt abstirbt,
emsig sich bewirbt
um den lebendigen Glauben,
der wird bald empfind1ich schauen,
dass niemand verdirbt,
wer der Welt abstirbt.

10. Nun ergreif ich dich,
ach! ergreife mich!
ich will nimmermehr dich lassen,
sondern gläubig dich umfassen,
weil im Glauben ich
nun ergreife dich.

11. Wenn ich weinen muss,
wird dein Tränenfluss
nun die meinen auch begleiten
und zu deinen Wunden leiten,
dass mein Tränenfluss
sich bald stillen muss.

12. Wenn ich mich aufs neu
wiederum erfreu,
freuest du dich auch zugleiche,
bis ich dort in deinem Reiche
ewiglich aufs neu
mich mit dir erfreu.

13. Hier durch Spott und Hohn,
dort die Ehrenkron;
hier im Hoffen und im Glauben,
dort im Haben und im Schauen;
denn die Ehrenkron
folgt auf Spott und Hohn.

14. Jesu, hilf, dass ich
allhier ritterlich
alles durch dich überwinde
und in deinem Sieg empfinde,
wie so ritterlich
du gekämpft für mich.

15. Du mein Preis und Ruhm,
werte Saronsblum,
in mir soll nun nichts erschallen
als was dir nur kann gefallen,
werte Saronsblum,
du mein Preis und Ruhm.
