Paula Almerares (Soprano)

Born: Argentina

The Argentinean soprano, Paula Almerares, started her vocal studies in Buenos Aires with Mirtha Garbarini and went on to study in France under the tutelage of Janine Reiss.

Paula Almerares made her operatic debut as Musetta in La bohème at the Teatro Argentino de La Plata and in 1993 she performed at the Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires as Antonia in Les contes d’Hoffmann with the tenor Alfredo Kraus. It was this role that earned her “The Best Argentinian Singer Award”. Her European debut followed in 1995 at La Fenice, Venice in Orpheus ed Euridice. She has performed extensively in South America as well as in North America and Europe at venues including Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires, Teatro Argentino de La Plata, Metropolitan Opera, Washington Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Teatro La Fenice, Teatro Verdi di Trieste, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Teatro Regio di Torino and Teatro Lirico di Cagliari.

Paula Almerares has worked with may acclaimed singers, conductors and directors in including Alfredo Kraus, Plácido Domingo, Mirella Freni, Juan Diego Flórez, Lorin Maazel, Sir Neville Marriner, Renato Bruson and Zubin Mehta.

Her repertoire includes Massenet’s Manon, Cleopatra in Giulio Cesare, Marguerite in Faust, Lucia Lucia di Lammermoor, Liù in Turandot, Violetta in La Traviata, Juliette in Roméo et Juliette, Leïla in Les Pêcheurs de Perles, Musetta in La bohème and rarely performed roles including Giulietta in Romeo e Giulietta by Vaccaj.

Paula Almerares is also an experienced performer of chamber and choral works including Debussy’s Le Martire de Saint-Sebastien with the London Symphony Orchestra, W.A. Mozart & Johannes Brahms Requiem, Rossini & Giovanni Battista Pergolesi Stabat Mater, J.S. Bach’s Magnificat (BWV 243), Cantata BWV 147 and Oster-Oratorium (BWV 249), Gustav Mahler’s Forth Symphony and Lauda per la nativita del Signore and Maria Egipziaca by Ottorino Respighi. She tours regularly tours in Europe with Maestro Claudio Scimone performing works by W.A. Mozart, George Frideric Handel, Tomaso Albinoni and Mercadante.

Future plans include Corinna in Il viaggio a Reims for the Teatro Argentino de La Plata and Pamina in Die Zauberflöte for Teatro Sodre, Uruguay. In 2012 Paula Almerares will perform Giulietta in I Capuleti e I Montecchi and debut as Mélisande for Tetro Argentino, Monte-Carlo and Teatro Filarmonico di Verona.
