Peter Becker (Bass-Baritone)

Born: India

The Indian-born bass-baritone, Peter Becker, began his musical training in Bombay, India at the Kinnara School of Music, where he studied tablas at the feet of Ravi Shankar. He began his professional singing career in Chevy Chase, Maryland as a paid boy soprano, thereby supplementing the income from his paper route.

Peter Becker is an avid performer of repertoire ranging from medieval to contemporary; from troubadour to torch song, plainsong to art song, with arias, broadsides, ballads, new compositions and popular standards interspersed throughout. He has performed on stages throughout the USA, Europe, Asia, and South America. Theater credits include performances with the Canadian Opera Company, Macerata Festival, Glimmerglass Opera, Teatro Opera di Roma, New York Shakespeare Festival, 20th/21st Century Consort, Metropolitan Opera Education Program, Eugene O'Neil Center, New York's Lyric Theater, and the Broadway show Band in Berlin.

Peter Becker's concert credits include appearances with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Linz Philharmoniker. He has been a featured guest artist with Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Smithsonian Chamber Players, Magnificat Baroque Ensemble, Newberry Consort, Folger Consort, Portland Baroque Orchestra, and ARTEK (Director: Gwendolyn Toth). He has performed at a number of festivals including Spoleto (Italy and USA), Caramoor, Ravinia, Aldeburgh, Utrecht, Hong Kong, Ravenna, Jerusalem, Saratoga, and Lille. As a member of the male vocal quintet Hudson Shad, he has performed with such distinguished conductors as Kurt Masur, Zubin Mehta, Michael Tilson Thomas, Charles Dutoit, Dennis Russell Davies, and Ingo Metzmacher. Contemporary music credits include Tan Dun's Marco Polo, Peter Maxwell Davies' Eight Songs for a Mad King, Heinz Karl Gruber's Frankenstein, Oliver Knussen's Where the Wild Things Are, and Kurt Weill's Seven Deadly Sins. He a founding member of the male vocal sextet Hudson Shad.Background.

Peter Becker has recorded for the Decca-London, New Albion, Dorian and Bard labels.
