Joëlle Charlier (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: Belgium

The Belgian mezzo-soprano, Joëlle Charlier, first studied at the Conservatoire Royal de Musique de Mons with Thierry Migliorini, obtaing 1st prize in singing and 1st prize in methodology (2000-2004). She then completed her training at the Conservatorium Maastricht with Axel Everaert, obtaining Master of Music degree (2004-2010). From 2007 to 2009, she took part in the International Lied Master Classes with Udo Reinemann in Brussels. Nowadays she perfects herself with Susanne Schimmack. Laureate of the 2012 International Singing Competition of Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg, she performed the role of Sophie Dorothea in Sigfried Matthus’s opera Kronprinz Friedrich (June-July 2012). As finalist of the Armel Opera Competition in 2013, she sang the role of Jocasta in Igor Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex in Hungary and Poland (October 2013). In March 2017, she won the first prize at the Concours International d'Opérette et d'Opéra Comique de l'UPMCF in Paris.

Joëlle Charlier is active as an independent opera singer since 2005. One of her first engagements at the opera was Jacqueline in Charles Gounod's Le Médecin malgré lui with the Fondation Royaumont (France). She also sang in Ravel's L’enfant et les sortilèges with the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège (December 2010), Gertrude in C. Gounod's Romeo et Juliette. She made her debut at the Opera Royal de Wallonie as Mary in R. Wagner's Fliegende Hollander (November 2011), and at the Vlaamse Opera in Wagner's Parsifal as Blumenmädchen (March-April 2013).

The operette takes a big place in her repertoire: the title-roles in Offenbach's La Grande Duchesse de Gerolstein and La Périchole at Brussels Operette Theater (December 2009-Decemberr 2011), Palmatica in Millöcker's Der Bettelstundent, Orlowsky in Strauss' Die Fledermaus, and lately Fragoletto in Offenbach's Les Brigands at Theater Aachen, Béatrix in Les Bavards by Offenbach, Jola in Clivia by Nico Dostal,...

She also regularly performs as a soloist in the oratorio repertoire with different ensembles such as the Chapelle des Minimes (J.S.
