Hugh Cutting (Counter-tenor)

Born: England

The English counter-tenor, Hugh Cutting, graduated with a first in music from Cambridge (2015-2018), where he was a scholar on the Pembroke Lieder Scheme and a choral scholar of St John’s College under Andrew Nethsingha. He is currently in his second year of the Master of Performance course at the Royal College of Music where he is a Leverhulme Arts Scholar. In 2019 Hugh was taken on by the Josephine Baker trust as a soloist for the next two years. He is generously supported by the Leverhulme Arts Scholarship at the Royal College of Music, Ms Jill McMahon and Mr Bradley Upham. He currently learns with Sally Burgess, and is coached by Simon Lepper and James Gilchrist.

Recent concert performances have included George Frideric Handel's Messiah with Geraint Bowen and Marches Baroque, a solo lute song appearance on the BBC Early Music Show, J.S. Bach's Ascension Oratorio BWV 11 with Ashley Solomon and RCM Baroque Orchestra and Chorus, J.S. Bach's Passions and cantatas (solos) with The Oxford Bach Soloists (Director: Tom Hammond-Davies) and Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge and ‘A Sephardic Journey in Music’ in Kettle’s Yard New Music Concert Series, Cambridge. Operatic roles have included Ottone in Monteverdi’s L’inconorazione Di Poppea, Daemon in Watts’ Kepler’s Trial in London (V&A Museum Theatre), and Athamas in G.F. Handel's Semele. He recently performed Tolomeo in G.F. Handel's Tolomeo and The Boy/Angel 1 in Benjamin's Written on Skin for RCM Spring Opera Scenes 2020. He is Musical Director of The Gentlemen of St John's (since Septeber 2017).

Upcoming projects include the role of Arsace in G.F. Handel's Partenope as part of Les Arts Florissants ‘Le Jardin des voix’ 2021 (August 2021), Purcell's Come ye Sons of Art and Love’s Goddess sure was Blind with The English Concert (October 2020), Purcell’s Welcome Songs with Solomon's Knot (October 2020), an appearance on recording with Iestyn Davies and Fretwork of German Baroque duets, Opera Scenes from Benjamin's Written on Skin with the Royal College of Music's Opera Studio (autumn of 2020), and G.F. Handel's Messiah at the Barbican with Britten Sinfonia (December 2021). He is currently based in London.
