It soon became an internationally renowned chamber choir, winning several prestigious competition, such as that of the 1984 European Broadcasting Union and the 1981 vocal ensemble competition of the BBC London "Let the people sing". The ensemble has participated in several world premieres and played on numerous LP and CD recordings. Highlights of an extensive concert activities were guest performances, radio and television productions in Berlin, Paris, Rome, Venice, Prague and Beirut, as well as in Scandinavia, Poland, Canada, Israel and East Asia.

The Stuttgarter Zeitung wrote on October 24, 2006, after a concert by the Freiburger Vokalensemble at the Stiftskirche: "we would like to always continue raving about the art of the Freiburger ..."

In a CD review of the Magazins klassik.com of May 2005, it was written:: "Wolfgang Schäfer's Freiburger Vokalensemble offers what is probably a perfect interpretation; we must mention: formidable intonation and tone compensation, a linguistic sensation (literally: an almost sensual experience!), the presentation of the texts ..."
