The English baritone and singing teacher, Robbie Haylett, obtained his undergraduate Music degree at Girton College, University of Cambridge (2011-2014). During his study period he sang as a choral scholar under the directorship of Nicholas Mulroy, as a member of and soloist with the University Chamber Choir (performing work from L.v. Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, to Igor Stravinsky's Les Noces, under conductors such as Sir Roger Norrington and Andrew Kennedy), as a recitalist, and as a soloist with Cambridge University Opera Society.
He also attended master-classes with Julius Drake, Roderick Williams, Eamonn Dougan, Andrew Kennedy, Ann Murray, Nicholas Mulroy.
Robbie Haylett has now established himself as a teacher and singer based in Islington, London. Previous roles include Dancaïro in Georges Bizet's Carmen for Kentish Opera, Mathieu in Giordano's Andrea Chénier for Midsummer Opera, The Traveller (Benjamin Britten's Curlew River for CUOS, Doctor P in Nyman's The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat with the Façade Ensemble, and, in concert/scenes performances, Monteverdi's Orféo, W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni and Count Almaviva in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro. A devotee of new and contemporary music, he has given the World Premiere of Rhiannon Randle's Temptations (playing Israelite Father) and her Kalthertzige (cycle for baritone and strings), David Earl's Strange Ghost (singing the roles of Dudley Ward and Frederick Kelly as well as substantial chorus work), and Louis D'Heudieres' various interpretations of utopian music'; UK premieres include Jeremy Thurlow's Over The Frost (consort and solo performance with chamber ensemble) and Johannes Brahms' arrangement J.S. Bach's Cantata BWV 21 for strings.
On the concert stage, Robbie Haylett has made solo appearances in some staples of the repertory, including Gabriel Fauré, Maurice Duruflé, and Johannes Brahms Requiems, Ralph Vaughan Williams' Five Mystical Songs and Fantasia on Christmas Carols, J.S. Bach's St John Passion (BWV 245) and Haydn's Creation.
In recital, Robbie Haylett has performed works by composers that include Hanns Eisler, Debussy, Gustav Mahler, Samuel Barber, Gabriel Fauré, Francis Poulenc, Johannes Brahms, Benjamin Britten, Schubert, Robert Schumann, L.v. Beethoven, Strauss, Amy Beach, Libby Larsen, and Gurney. Recently he gave the UK premiere of Dai Fujikura's my letter to the world.
As a teacher, Robbie Haylett continues to work in several schools across the UK, teaches privately, and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Performance Education course from Guildhall School of Music and Drama with a Merit certification. |
