Henk van Heijnsbergen (Bass-Baritone)

Born: 1954 - Zaandam, the Netherlands

The Dutch bass-baritone, Henk van Heijnsbergen, began in 1978 with his singing studies with Wout Oosterkamp, in combination with various master-classes.

In the Netherlands Henk van Heijnsbergen performs regularly with such orchestras as the Omroeporkesten, Noord Nederlands Orkest, Limburgs Symphonie Orkest, Brabants Orkest and Residentie Orkest Den Haag. He has worked with conductors such as Kees Bakels, Frans Brüggen, Mark Elder, Iván Fischer, Jean Fournet, Graeme Jenkins, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Reinbert de Leeuw, Ingo Metzmacher, Kenneth Montgomery, Stefan Soltesz, Marc Soustrot, Ed Spanjaard, Edo de Waart, Alberto Zedda and Jaap van Zweden.

Henk van Heijnsbergen has gained an international fame by participating in many of performances of works by Stockhausen, conducted by the composer himself. He has also appeared in several oratorios abroad, including at the Palace of Culture Sofia and La Scala in Milan.

In the 1990-1992 seasons, Henk Heijnsbergen made his his opera debut as Eremit in Der Freischütz with Opera Forum. Then followed numerous engagements with Opera Forum (now Nationale Reisopera), Opera Zuid and at the Vlaamse Opera, where he is invited each season for at least one project (June 2000 Madame Butterfly, September 2000 Rigoletto). He now has expanded his repertoire to include roles as Micah in Die verkaufte Braut, Nourabad in Georges Bizet's Les Pecheurs des Perles, Basilio in Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Igor Stravinsky's Threni, Abimelech in Camille Saint-Saëns' Samson et Dalila, Colline in La Bohème, Angelotti in Tosca, Billy Jackrabbit in La Fanciulla del West, Monterone in Rigoletto, Mr. Flint in Billy Budd, Soerin in Pique Dame and Secund Murder and Mayor in Richard III by Battistelli.

Henk van Heijnsbergen was also invited by the Holland Festival (Maschinist Hopkins by Max Brand and Een Ziel by Hout van Robert Heppener), as well as De Nederlandse Opera for various productions (L.v. Beethoven's Fidelio, Die Frau ohne Schatten, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Salome). He is a regular guest of Nederlandse Radio, including Jaco in concert performance of Verdi's opera Ernani and Janácek’s opera The Makropulos Case, or the VARA Matinee conducted by Ingo Metzmacher, as Pimen in Boris Godounov with the Residentie Orkest Den Haag conducted by Gennady Rozhdestvensky, in L'Isola disabitata with the Radio Kamer Koor conducted by Frans Brüggen and as Cadmus in Die Bachantinnen by Egon Wellesz with the Radio Philharmonisch Orkest conducted by Edo de Waart. Recently he performed the role of Daland in Der Fliegende Holländer in a production of the Zeeland Nazomer Festival. At the Vlaamse Opera he was heard in I. Stravinsky's Threni, in Samson et Dalila, as Captain in Evgeny Onegin, as Mr. Flint in Billy Budd, as Frate in Don Carlo, Angelotti in Tosca , Il Marchese di Calatrava in La Forza del Destino, Billy Jackrabbit in La Fanciulla del West, Reinmar von Zweter in Tannhäuser, Soerin in Pique Dame, Monterone in Rigoletto, Il Dottore Grenvil in La Traviata and as Secund Murder and as Mayor in the world premiere of Richard III by Giorgio Battistelli (2004-2005 season) . He also sang the role of Don Quixote in the creation of Cuadro Cervantino (scenes from Cervantes' Don Quijote for music theatre) by Lucien Goethals in the lunchtime concerts of the Vlaamse Opera.
