Francesc Ortega (Baritone)

Born: Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain

The Catalan baritone, Francesc Ortega i Martí, began his musical training in the boys' choir L'Escolania de Montserrat, where he was directed by Kirill Petrenko, Mstislav Rostropovich and others. Master-classes also led him to Brigitte Fassbaender, Ton Koopman, Hartmut Höll and Richard Levitt. After completing his master studies with Professor Torsten Meyer at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg, he was accepted for the study program Masterclass / Concert Exams. In autumn 2017, he won the Konzerthaus Freiburg Förderpreis 2017 and was a scholarship holder of the Helen-Rosenberg Foundation Freiburg. He was also a fellow of the Victoria de los Ángeles Foundation and winner of the “Beca Bach” from the Bach Foundation Barcelona.

Francesc Ortega has performed under the direction of renowned conductors such as Jordi Savall, Andrea Marcon and René Jacobs at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the KKL Lucerne and La Cité de la Musique in Paris. He has performed in some prestigious European ensembles such as WDR Rundfunkchor Köln, La Cetra Barockorchester & Vocklensemble Basel (Director: Andrea Marcon; since November 2016), Zürcher Sing-Akademie (Directors: Timothy Brown/Florian Helgath; since November 2018), Vokalakademie Berlin or La Capella Reial de Catalunya (Director: Jordi Savall; since May 2014). As part of the opera, he has sung the roles of Papageno in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Pacuvio in Rossini's La pietra del Paragone, Pausole in Arthur Honegger's Les aventures du Roi Pausole, Le podestat in Georges Bizet's Docteur Miracle, conducted by Attilio Cremonesi, Claire Levacher and Neil Beardmore.

Together with his pianist Victoria Guerrero, Francesc Ortega performs regularly in Germany and Spain since 2013. In the summer of 2018 Ortega took part in the first Lied Academy of the Schubertiada in Vilabertran with Professor Wolfram Rieger. In the coming season, he will perform in Switzerland, Romania, Austria, France, Germany and Spain as a soloist and ensemble singer.

Francesc Ortega currenly lives in Freiburg and since April 2019 he teaches singing at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg.
